A proposed law in Mississippi would make it illegal for men to masturbate.
00:04
The law is called the Contraception Begins at Erection Act, and it would make it unlawful
00:08
for a person to discharge genetic material without the intent to fertilize an embryo.
00:14
Offenders would be fined up to $10,000.
00:16
The bill was referred to the Judiciary Committee on Monday.
00:19
If this sounds like a prank, it basically is, but one intended to make a point.
00:24
The bill was filed by Democratic State Senator Bradford Blackmon.
00:27
He told Newsweek that the bill's purpose is to point out the double standards in legislation,
00:32
saying,
00:33
The reactions from some quarters relating to my bill indicate that men are not held
00:37
to the same standard when it comes to the intrusion into their personal private affairs
00:41
as women have been held to with the reversal of Roe v. Wade.
00:44
According to health policy non-profit KFF, abortion is effectively banned in Mississippi.
00:49
NBC News reports that Blackmon's bill is unlikely to pass.
00:53
But if his intent was to bring attention to reproductive rights issues, he seems to have
00:57
succeeded at that.
