Eight million dollars is expected to be expended on the new Ultimate Soca Champion competition, which has a first prize comparable to the now defunct International Soca Monarch.


But the format of the show is a lot different, and will be rolled out with elements similar to international music competitions like America's Got Talent and The Voice.

00:00auditioning, voting, reality TV, vocal coaching. It will all be part of the
00:05process which is to culminate in a competition where 10 finalists will be
00:09hoping to cop the ultimate soca champion title. One of the organizers, Jerome
00:14Itzromprasia, says artists from the region and international landscape are
00:19invited to participate. The prize for the ultimate soca champion will be 1 million
00:26dollars. It will make sure that we have our grand prize available to our artists
00:31and one thing that artists always ask for is to be paid on time. The
00:37competition is being hosted in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism
00:40Culture and the Arts. As for the budget, the overall budget, the overall budget
00:47for this when we estimated was over, I think the last budget we had was around
00:538 million 8 million dollars. Okay and how much of that is coming from the
00:58Ministry of Culture? We don't have the final figure from the ministry but it's
01:01somewhere in the vicinity of around 4 million dollars. The show also features a
01:05youth category targeting artists ages 16 to 25 years. The first prize winner
01:11crowned youth soca champion will receive $200,000. The show eliminates
01:17the separation of the power and groovy soca in the competition although
01:22special prizes will be awarded in both categories. Because I myself know that
01:28artists who come in and perform a power song would have a different energy than
01:32artists coming and perform a groovy song. So what we're gonna do is we're gonna
01:35have the judging criteria based on that where we have a certain percentage for
01:40crowd response, a certain percentage for your performance, a certain percentage
01:44for your vocals and a certain percentage in terms of your overall performance.
01:49Precia states that prizes for other finalists will be done in a tiered
01:54structure. While the finals of the competition will be held live, the plan
01:58is to package the show from the auditions to the finals with the aim of
02:03broadcast locally, regionally and internationally. We have since made
02:08connections in Los Angeles with one of our consulting producers. Actually we
02:14have two consulting producers on the show. One of them has worked on shows
02:18such as the Grammys, was done The Voice, was done American Idol, was done Dancing
02:24with the Stars, BET Awards etc. So with our two consulting producers they are
02:29going to be guiding us through this entire process. Precia says it allows for
02:33revenue earning and a generation of more foreign exchange. Auditions will take
02:38place at the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts on Saturday January 25th
02:43starting at 9 a.m. Video submissions are accepted for the selection of regional
02:49and international artists or local artists who have video performances in
02:54front of a thousand or more people. These audition submissions will begin on
02:59January 20th with a deadline of January 26th. There is no registration fee to
03:06enter the competition. A semi-final event will be held on February 9th while the
