00:00I love it and that's what I trained for and I knew it was going to be here so I was ready

00:08for it. I've had myself in many situations with the pressure before so yeah I'm comfortable

00:13with it. It's a good place to be.

00:20Daniel Sanders has been riding a bike and watching the Dakar since childhood, following

00:25in the footsteps of his illustrious compatriot and two-time winner, Toby Price.

00:33Probably watching it on TV with my dad back home on the couch. I started riding when I

00:38was eight so yeah I was already riding then and to see the Dakar, the whole 14 day race

00:45as well, to hear this was another world.

00:52I jumped in the Australian enduro team and we started doing desert racing back home and

00:56Toby was my team mate then so going against Toby, it was a quick learning curve of where

01:01I needed to improve in my overall bike skills. To learn off him and see how fast he was before

01:09he went into full-time Dakar rider, it definitely helped me because I knew what level I needed

01:13to be at. I sort of had done everything in enduro that I wanted to do so the Dakar was

01:20the next toughest thing to do, the ultimate pinnacle of it all.

01:33The main thing I had to focus on was the road book. I knew my speed was good and my technical

01:37riding in the stones was really good, sand was really good. The first year was for me

01:42just to not get lost and finish the race and get that experience.

01:47It was really important just to stay calm in this high-speed stress and if you lose

01:53time to not go too crazy but I didn't really slow down.

02:02Unfortunately, a lot of lows in Dakar. The first year was a super high and there has

02:08been ups and downs but a lot of downs.

02:11I love it. I love the challenge. Even laying on a hospital bed with a snapped femur or

02:17an elbow, I don't know how many weeks until I'm back. It's just like I want to get back

02:23and be back to where I was and better.

02:28I haven't had the chance to tell myself to back down or calm down yet. Nothing scared

02:34me. I always stay in my comfort zone. I never go out of it and that's probably the most

02:40important thing as a rider, to know your limit.

02:43Dakar 2025 has been Sander's masterpiece. He has dominated from the first day to the last.

02:50The first five days set me up really well and I knew that first week was going to be

02:54important. Everyone's like, take it easy, take it easy but I knew that when there's

02:58a chance to take time, take it and you've got to grab as much as you can because you

03:02can lose it so quick as well.

03:10I try not to think about it every day because it's like the last four years of what I've

03:16put my body through and sacrifices and what I all did from the start. Then the two massive

03:22injuries that set me off for two years and it just flipped my life upside down, not being

03:26able to race. Hopefully we get that feeling and what it means but it'd be massive.
