Bill Maher Reacts To California Cutting Red Tape After L.A. Wildfires

Bill Maher has a question for California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass ... why does it take a massive disaster for the state to cut red tape?!?

00:00Karen Bass is taking a lot of heat.

00:04So is Gavin Newsom, but there is going to be a recall on Karen Bass.

00:09We will see what happens.

00:10But a lot of people think she failed in terms of leadership

00:14and, you know, where budget cuts may have affected the fire department.

00:20And there are other people who are saying,

00:22how dare you even talk about that in the middle of the fire.

00:26So where do you stand?

00:27Well, we all took a lot of heat.

00:33I'm with the people who want to hold politicians accountable.

00:37You know, this we shouldn't talk about it now.

00:39It's so funny to hear that coming out of the mouths of liberals

00:42because they hate it when conservatives say that after a gun tragedy,

00:46which is what conservatives always say after a mass shooting.

00:49This is not the time to politicize it.

00:51And then it never is.

00:54It is absolutely the time to talk about it.

00:56This is what my editorial is about Friday night on the show.

01:01Was it always going to be bad?

01:03Of course, their arguments are not wrong.

01:06We built the city in a terrible place to build a city.

01:09Global warming absolutely does make hot stuff and weather worse.

01:16Winds were ridiculous.

01:18I get all that.

01:19And they also made a lot of errors.

01:23Bush accountable for Katrina and thought Rudy Giuliani was an idiot for

01:28putting the command center in the World Trade Center,

01:31which is the place they attack for and were most likely to attack again,

01:35which he was.

01:37Well,

01:38then you have to have some intellectual honesty and criticize your team

01:41when they don't do it right.

01:44And they've had a lot of a long time to get this writer.

01:47It was always going to be bad.

01:50All of these were always going to be bad.

01:52And they always seem to be the worst they ever possibly could be.

01:55So no,

01:57I think we,

01:58we should demand better.

01:59You know,

02:00I watch your show every Friday night when you're on.

02:03And I followed your journey.

02:06I'm trying to get the necessary permits to take down a shed in your

02:12backyard over a period of,

02:14I believe more than a year.

02:17And that's what I had to build.

02:19I was building the shade and solar.

02:21This is where your solar,

02:22the solar,

02:23trying to get the solar hooked up,

02:25which by the way is what the state wants you to do.

02:27If it took you a year and going on television every week,

02:31shaming the state to build a shed for solar,

02:35just to get solar panels.

02:36When you look at the red tape with the coastal commission,

02:39with building and safety,

02:41with all of the rigmarole you have to go through to build a house and

02:45especially after hillsides may be compromised and whatnot.

02:49And you look at the scope of this,

02:51how optimistic are you that that could change enough so that LA can

02:56rebuild?

02:57I always think there's a middle of the road,

02:59actual practical solution,

03:01everything.

03:02And for this,

03:03I would say,

03:04um,

03:05was California's Uber progressive politics,

03:08the cause of this fire?

03:10Of course not.

03:11Um,

03:12did it,

03:13did it,

03:14did it MP impede them to some degree?

03:16Absolutely.

03:17That's the margin of error.

03:19I'm saying we can't,

03:20uh,

03:21abide by anymore.

03:22Now,

03:23as far as the red tape,

03:24I see that they're all Newsome bass.

03:26They're all saying we're going to cut red tape as if they're doing us a

03:30favor.

03:31My question is,

03:32well,

03:33if you can do it now,

03:34why don't you always do it?

03:35Obviously it can be done.

03:37It's not a favor to us to cut the red tape.

03:39Why do we live in this state in this red tape?

03:42Nightmare.

03:43The other times of the year when we're not on fire.
