00:18For more than one million people have left their homes in 2024.

00:29The Palestine fuel crisis threatens the functioning of health facilities, sanitation and water

01:00Hello and welcome to From the South, my name is Belinda De Los Santos, I'm from Aterzo

01:03Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.

01:05We begin with the news.

01:19We now begin with the information, Haiti is facing one of the most serious displacement

01:24crises in its recent history.

01:26According to the International Organization for Migration, more than one million people

01:30left their homes in 2024.

01:33The United Nations organization identifies the wave of violence imposed by criminal groups

01:37as the root cause.

01:39Port-au-Prince, the capital of the country, is one of the cities most affected by the

01:44phenomenon given that over 80% of the city is controlled by the coalition of criminal

01:50groups living together.

01:52According to Kennedy Ocot, the spokesperson for the IOM, the numbers will have tripled

01:58when compared to 2023, especially in the capital where displacement has increased by

02:0487%.

02:10In December 2023, we did record around 315,000 people were displaced from the violence.

02:18One year, one year since then, we have seen the number tripled to over a million people

02:25who have now been displaced because of gang violence in Haiti.

02:29This is a really troubling number and it represents the security situation that most Haitians

02:36are currently in.

02:38President Claudia Sheinbaum presented the Mexico Plan, a national and social economic

02:42development agenda made up of 13 goals whose objective is to reduce poverty and inequality.

02:49Antonio Aranda brings us more details.

02:54Mexico seeks to consolidate its position as one of the most economically developed

02:58countries by attracting foreign investment and strengthening the domestic market through

03:02the Mexico Plan.

03:07Miguel is a walnut producer.

03:10His seeds follow an artisanal process and he believes that the strategy should be an

03:14opportunity to technify the field.

03:20It is important to consume national products.

03:22In my case, I support agriculture.

03:28In the countryside, the main problem is technification.

03:31We are far behind our main competitors in walnuts, the United States.

03:35They are very technified and reduce many costs.

03:38We have to spend a lot of money to do it in a more traditional way and that creates a

03:42disadvantage for us.

03:48Substituting imports and increasing domestic content in manufacturing is part of the Mexico

03:53Plan.

03:54Carolina acknowledges that this protects domestic jobs.

03:58With the plan, we increase the country's economy and we favor jobs and in general the country's

04:05economy as a whole.

04:12We avoid importing so many products and the products that we consume are at better prices

04:17And on the other hand, we strengthen the entire agricultural sector.

04:26The Mexico Plan is a public, private and foreign investment route for at least $277 billion,

04:33which seeks the integration of North America.

04:39This speaks to us or is a reflection of what Claudia Scheinbaum is looking for during her

04:44six-year term.

04:45We can take this as the real national development plan.

04:48I would like to highlight that in general there are several components of the plan that

04:52wink at the new United States administration.

04:55That is, the president seeks to integrate the North American region, she seeks to increase

04:59Mexican production and replace imports from China, which is a priority issue for the new

05:04United States administration.

05:11President Claudia Scheinbaum aims to make Mexico's economy number 10 in the world, but

05:16without neglecting social equity and well-being.

05:19In reality, it is a vision of the development of our country that is equitable, sustainable,

05:27of industrialization, of economic growth.

05:31Yes, but above all of well-being for our people and of benefit for everyone.

05:42Textiles, automotive, pharmaceuticals, agribusiness and electromobility are some of the key sectors

05:49to be developed through a portfolio of more than 2,000 projects that will allow the creation

05:57of at least 1.5 million additional jobs in specialized manufacturing by 2030.

06:07And in other news, the anti-fascist international Guatemala chapter repudiated the visit of

06:13the Venezuelan fugitive from justice, Edmundo Gonzalez, to the country, demanding that the

06:17government of Bernardo Arevalo to cease its support of the impositions of imperialism

06:22against Venezuela.

06:28The anti-fascist international Guatemala chapter, in the name of the will towards peace that

06:33characterizes the noble people of Guatemala, expresses its most energetic rejection of

06:38the arrival of Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia to our national territory.

06:49This person represents death, terrorism and imperialist interference against the sovereignty

06:55of the brotherly people of Venezuela.

06:58His presence in our country is a direct attack on the values of peace, justice and solidarity

07:04that guide our anti-fascist struggle in the defense of the peoples of Latin America.

07:15As Guatemalans committed to peace, we demand that Bernardo Arevalo and his government stop

07:20lending themselves to the impositions of North American imperialism that manifest their support

07:25for this person and their attacks against the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people

07:30who elected Nicolás Maduro as their president.

07:37Likewise, the anti-fascist international Guatemala chapter also repudiated the aggressions to

07:43the Venezuelan diplomatic headquarters which threaten its national sovereignty.

07:50We repudiate the fascist and interfering actions that some Venezuelan embassies have suffered,

07:57thus attacking its sovereignty.

08:05We call on governments not to allow actions against Venezuelan goods and territory located

08:10in other countries.

08:11We express our commitment to defend and resist together with the Venezuelan people in our

08:15struggle against fascism.

08:59Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele defended the reactivation of metallic mining on the

09:03grounds that if rivers get polluted due to his project, it is because they were clean.

09:09It is negative consequences.

09:11The Salvadoran legislation had banned the practice that Bukele is now willing to reactivate.

09:16The president categorically assured that the mining is not linked to rivers pollution,

09:22but showed no specific evidence of his criteria.

09:26In contrast, studies endorsed by the United Nations unfolded that 90% of industrial extractive

09:32operations use cyanide.

09:35That is why experts have asked the executive and the legislature to disregard this initiative.

09:46We go now to Palestine, as the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs

10:07warns that the fuel crisis in Gaza continues to threaten the functioning of health facilities

10:13in the Strip.

10:14The agency has said that Gaza's partially functioning hospitals lack fuel reserves and

10:19rely on partial deliveries from international agencies to safeguard only the most critical

10:26services.

10:27The shortages could also put 75 hemodialysis machines out of service across the Strip,

10:33threatening the lives of some 700 patients that suffer from kidney disease.

10:38According to the humanitarian agency, the crisis has been triggered by the Israeli blockade

10:43of Gaza and is directly affecting the medical care of 2,000 patients in Deir Ebbelah, Hanounis

10:50and Rafah, and a further 220 in the north of the enclave.

11:03Also in this context, the UN humanitarian agency also warns that water, sanitation and

11:09hygiene facilities in Gaza are at risk of being paralyzed by a lack of fuel.

11:15All of this has forced aid groups to make impossible choices, such as having to decide

11:19daily between supplying water, pumping sewage, repairing water or sewage leaks, or moving

11:25solid waste.

11:26This has aggravated living conditions for displaced people surviving on extremely limited

11:31quantities of drinking water, cooking and personal hygiene products, and exacerbating

11:37the spread of pests, infectious diseases and other public health risks.

11:51Gaza is redefining the wounds of war, so say medical surgeons referring to injuries caused

11:57by U.S. bombs sent to Israel and used against women and children in the Strip.

12:02Based on field studies, Save the Children claims in its latest report that the occupation

12:07and its U.S. partner mutilated 15 Palestinian children every day during 2024.

12:14At least 5,230 children have sustained injuries that require significant rehabilitation support.

12:21In addition, Israel prevents them from receiving treatment, so they do not receive prosthesis,

12:27medicines or rehabilitation, condemning them early to pathologies typical of people over

12:3380 years of age.

12:43And the Yemeni army claimed responsibility for the missile attack that hit an Israeli

12:48power plant on Wednesday.

12:49The Houthis explained that they carried out a military operation with a cruise missile

12:55against the enemy power plant of Umm al-Rashar, located in the city of Eilat in the south

13:01of occupied Palestine.

13:03They also declared that they sent several drones to several Israeli installations in

13:08Tel Aviv, assuring that all of them were successful military operations.

13:13The Yemeni government ratified that as long as Israel besieges the Palestinian people,

13:19they will maintain their attacks against the Israeli forces.

14:12In South Korea, police forces arrested, ousted President Yoon Sung-kyo on Wednesday, making

14:17him the first sitting president to be arrested.

14:20The president dismissed for his brief imposition of martial law, was involved in several incidents

14:26before he was finally arrested at 10.33 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

14:32According to information from the Bureau for High-Level Official Corruption Cases, Yoon

14:37went to the agency's headquarters for questioning.

14:41The president previously recorded a message to the country stating that he would submit

14:45to justice to prevent bloodshed.

15:06And in the United States, fires continue to rage in Los Angeles as people try to protect

15:11their belongings and homes.

15:13Let's take a closer look with our colleague Luis Gutierrez.

15:19This man works as a janitor at this building in Pacific Palisades, the hardest hit by the

15:23fires in California.

15:25He stayed behind to watch the place and managed to keep it from catching fire using garden

15:30hoses and the support of firefighters.

15:33But it actually had spread to the property of the building next door.

15:37So I was just putting as much water down onto the bottom as I could and just actually doing

15:43a decent job of tamping it down.

15:46For Ridgway, it was a necessary mission.

15:50I felt like it was a duty to at least make sure that was attempted to be saved if possible.

15:57And also, you know, even if it didn't come here, none of this really had happened, there

16:01still would have been the possibility of outsiders coming in and looters and stealing their stuff.

16:07And so if I...

16:09The collection centers have been crucial for those who have lost their belongings or remain

16:14evacuated amidst uncertainty for their homes.

16:17The street I live on, everybody on one side of the street, all their houses are entirely

16:22wiped out.

16:23And on my side of the street, starting with my house and a few neighbors down, maybe about

16:29four houses stood up and everybody else lost their homes.

16:34My house is standing, yes, but we don't know, we don't know what condition it's in.

16:42So, yeah, we haven't been able to go back to check.

16:46They won't let us.

16:48For firefighters, putting out fires in high winds has become a difficult task.

16:53Some days are harder than others.

16:55How hard?

16:56After the first day, many people that I've known for a long time in base camp barely

16:59recognized me.

17:00My phone didn't recognize me to turn on.

17:02Just dirty, tired.

17:03But today will be not so bad.

17:06Steep, a good hike, but we'll pace ourselves and drink lots of water and be ready for a

17:11long haul of work here and the next fire.

17:14But it's January.

17:15We're not supposed to be to fires in January.

17:17It's an honor and a privilege to be here, you know, serving the community, paying my

17:21debt to society, just giving back to the people, you know, of the community.

17:27It's a lot.

17:30Returning Los Angeles to their previous state will cost time and resources.

17:34It's going to cost tens of billions of dollars to get Los Angeles back to where it was.

17:41So we're going to need Congress to step up to provide funding to get this done.

17:46And we're going to get that done, God willing.

17:50Firefighters and local and national authorities will be put to the test as they must navigate

17:55the strong winds that are expected.

18:01In this context, the Iranian government reported that the Red Crescent offered to assist the

18:06United States to fight off the wildfires raging in Los Angeles, but Washington turned it down

18:11and asked Iran for money instead.

18:14Hossein Koulivan, head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, explained that he sent a

18:19letter to the director of the U.S. Red Cross to not only express condolences for the victims

18:25and their families, but also to help Los Angeles with experts, equipment, and logistics.

18:30However, the U.S. counterpart appreciated the bid, but he limited himself to request

18:35financial assistance.
