Teenage boy drowns in public lake east of Perth

A teenage boy has died after being pulled from the water at a public lake east of Perth. Emergency services were called to Lake Leschenaultia in Childow at about two o'clock this afternoon with the boy unable to be saved.

east of Perth, now the scene of a tragedy. Police confirming a 17-year-old boy had drowned.

His body pulled from the water this afternoon. Swimmers recounting the moments they heard

screams for help.

We ran, we dropped everything and ran. Everyone was just running and tried to find this boy.

They said he went under, he went under.

Several police, ambulance and fire and rescue vehicles rushed to the lake after receiving

reports a swimmer was in distress. In the meantime, witnesses frantically taking turns

to dive underwater, with some locals bringing scuba gear to help.

We dove so far, it was so dark. We got the boats out, moved the pontoon, all until the

police and ambulance and everyone came. But despite their best efforts, the rescue was

unsuccessful. Everyone was shaken up, everyone was in tears in the end because we couldn't

find him. Police say the death isn't being treated as suspicious and a report will be

prepared for the coroner.
