00:00All eyes are on Glasgow as the UK's first safer drug consumption room has opened in the East End.
00:05Following a decade of discussions and planning, the Thistle Centre will provide a space
00:09where drug users can take illegal substances under medical supervision in a clean environment.
00:14Simultaneous to the opening, Westminster has announced it is launching an inquiry
00:18into the legal and policy challenges faced in setting up and running the facility,
00:22as well as its effectiveness in reducing drug-related deaths.
00:25It will also examine what legal changes might need to be made
00:28to allow the facility to run sustainably beyond its three-year pilot.
00:32Similar centres across the world have found to be successful
00:35in reducing the fatal impact of illegal drugs.
00:37Though it is near impossible to estimate the impact of this centre,
00:40it is hoped it will have a similar outcome and a bid to have a more empathetic approach
00:44to drug users.
00:46Scotland has the highest rate of drug deaths in Europe,
00:48with the latest figures showing 1,172 people died from drug misuse in 2023,
00:55a rise of 12% from 2022.
