00:00McCutcheon's Mavericks took 2025 basketball by the horns, and by the

00:04horns, I mean the Bison at Benton Central High School. The McCutcheon girls just

00:08played their first game of the year. Not only did they shine on the court, but

00:12they won their first 2025 match. The Mavericks are all about team spirit and

00:16especially the seniors are really performing for their final season. Coach

00:20Jeff Kanoi of the McCutcheon girls basketball said the seniors this year

00:23are the perfect Star City sports star. Kolea and Marley have been two of our

00:27for four years been our program did a good job. Coach Kanoi points out these

00:30sports stars Mallory and Kolea take on a huge responsibility and leadership

00:34position on the team. A lot of times we'll call the seniors in and say hey

00:37what do you think about this, think about this kid or that kid, not about kids

00:40about our practice schedule, about how things are going, so it's nice to have

00:43that and that great to hear them say that as a coach very proud of that. Star

00:46City News asked Mallory and Kolea if they were excited about their first win.

00:50Yeah, yeah we feel really good. It's hard to get back into it with it being our first game of the new year.

00:57Teamwork means everything to them. I think we have a really good team

01:02camaraderie. We just get closer every year and like every like practice or

01:05like team bonding stuff. Yeah we're definitely still a young team but even

01:10our young ones have blended in really well. We all have great chemistry, we all

01:14get along and we have a lot of fun together. Mallory and Kolea had some

01:18advice for young sports stars who want to be leaders on their team. Put your

01:21teammates first, celebrate their successes because like you're a team and

01:28their success is your success. I would just say try your best and play as hard

01:33as you can whether you're scoring or on defense, just give it your all. And these winning

01:38McCutcheon girls have certainly earned the sports stars of the new year.
