00:00According to the government, County Durham have the highest rates of overweight or obese
00:04adults in the whole of the United Kingdom. The report shows that 77.7% of adults in County
00:11Durham are overweight or obese. In the North East, Darlington has the second highest rate
00:17at 71.8% and Sunderland have the second lowest rate at 65.1%, with the North East average
00:24of obesity in overweight adults being 70.2%. So why are the rates so high for the North
00:31East?
00:32I think it's a lack of motivation, to be honest, because I know there's so many people who
00:37just do nothing but sit in bedrocks, like not want to do sports, not want to actually
00:42get a job or like go out, they'd rather just sit indoors. I think that's the main thing.
00:48Because I mean, I wouldn't say it's like a lack of like funding or anything like that.
00:52I think there's plenty of options to get into sports or stuff like that. I mean, doesn't
00:57take long to go out and you know, do a few runs.
01:00Well, yeah, the standard answer is it's probably cheaper to actually have cheap food, which
01:06isn't so good for you. And it's moreish. Yeah, snacks and things like that. And I think the
01:13biggest problem is that there's not enough attention in schools paid to cooking.
01:20While doctors define obesity as excessive or abnormal fat accumulation that may harm
01:24your health and say that ways to prevent obesity can include maintaining lifestyle factors
01:29such as a balanced diet, physical activity and even getting enough sleep.
01:34However, government data from 2023 shows that only 28.6% of adults in the North East met
01:42the five-a-day fruit and vegetable consumption recommendations, while the UK average was
01:4731%. The data from that year also showed that 63% of North Eastern adults were physically
01:53active, while the national average was 67%.
