At least 71 people died in the Bona district in Ethiopia Sunday (Dec 29) afternoon when a truck packed with passengers plunged into a river, according to the spokesperson for the southern Sidama regional government and a statement. 00:11Vosenyele Simeon, spokesperson for the Saddama regional government, confirmed on Monday that

00:17the victims included 68 men and three women.

00:21Five others remain in critical condition and are receiving treatment at Bona General Hospital.

00:26According to Vosenyele, the truck missed a bridge and fell into the river on a road

00:31known for its sharp bends.

00:33The state-run Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, EBC, reported that some passengers were returning

00:40from a wedding ceremony, with some families tragically losing multiple members in the

00:44accident.

00:46Regional traffic police indicated that the truck was overloaded, which likely contributed

00:50to the crash.
