Residents in Queensland’s South Burnett region clean up after heavy rain

Burnett – just inland from Queensland's Sunshine Coast – are cleaning up today after the region was hit by heavy storms and flash flooding. Despite constant warnings, some motorists had to be rescued after driving through flood waters.

00:00It took emergency services two hours to rescue a person from the car behind me, which became

00:07stuck in floodwaters here at Tabinga, which is just outside of Kingaroy.

00:13Swiftwater rescue teams were involved in the operation, while across the South Burnet police

00:18declared an emergency situation due to flash flooding across several roads.

00:24Across the region, 119mm of rain fell in two hours during the storm in Kingaroy, while

00:31some businesses remain closed today as the clean-up continues.

00:35It's the second time this month the region has been hit by such heavy rainfall.

00:40The region's mayor says several intersections have been damaged and they're seeking support

00:45from the state and federal governments for support to fix these roads.

00:50Across the state, Harvey Bay recorded heavy falls up to 180mm and flash flooding was also

00:55seen in Toowoomba and across central Queensland.

01:00The Bureau of Meteorology says the risk of heavy rain today is still there, but the upper

01:06trough that is causing this intense rainfall should move off the coast at some point after that.
