Firefighters battle to contain bushfire in Grampains National Park, Victoria

Firefighters in Victoria are battling to contain a bushfire which has burnt through more than 5000 hectares of bushland in the Grampians National Park.

00:00Today, the blaze is burning north and south of the rural Marinatoa area, including on

00:06private property.

00:07It has been downgraded from yesterday's emergency level, but fire authorities are warning that

00:13this fire is significant, and that Grampians residents need to be alert.

00:18Fire authorities say there are good containment lines on the western edge of the fire, and

00:22that the fire isn't running as strongly as it was yesterday, but parts of the fire are

00:27in hard-to-reach mountainous terrain, and ground crews are having trouble accessing

00:31these parts.

00:32A relief centre has been set up in Dunkeld on Stirling Place, but Red Cross volunteers

00:37say no one has needed assistance so far.

00:40A Watch and Act and Prepare to Leave warning is in place for the Grampians, Marinatoa,

00:45Victoria Valley, and Jimmy Creek, while communities east of the Grampians, that's including

00:50Moyston, Barton, and Willara, are urged to stay informed of the situation.

00:55The fires follow a very dry winter and spring in south-west Victoria, with low rainfall

01:00recorded.

01:01Grass on farmlands south of the Grampians is yellow and dry, and residents are hoping

01:06for a good soaking as we head further into summer.
