UN envoy urges 'credible, inclusive' transition in Syria

UN envoy Geir Pedersen has urged for a '"credible, inclusive" political transition in Syria. He also called for a new constitution and elections in accordance with a previous UN resolution.

00:00After concluding a visit to Damascus and meeting the new administration, the UN envoy to Syria,

00:05Geir Pedersen, said the country needs a political transition that will be credible and inclusive

00:09for the Syrian society. According to the envoy, this process should take place under a UN

00:14resolution adopted in 2015 to help negotiate a political solution in the country. Talking

00:19to reporters on Wednesday, Pedersen also mentioned of forming a new constitution.

00:23I have expressed there is a lot of hope that we can now see the beginning of a new Syria.

00:30A new Syria that in line with Security Council Resolution 2254 will adopt a new constitution

00:38that will ensure that it is a social contract, a new social contract for all Syrians and

00:45that we will have free and fair elections when that time comes after a transitional

00:51period.

00:52It is not yet clear if Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, the main former rebel group now in

00:57control of Syria, will pursue such a process. The group has set up an interim administration

01:02comprising members of its Salvation Government. It will oversee the country until March, but

01:07the new ruler, Ahmed al-Sharaa, have not made clear how the transition to a new, fully empowered

01:12government would take place.
