Luigi Mangione's grandmother left behind tens of millions of dollars to her family ... but now there's a strong chance Luigi will be iced out of the will after being charged with murder.

00:06Thompson, is what we know so far about his background.

00:10And we found out something very interesting about his family.

00:13When I say his background, it is puzzling to people

00:17how someone ended up in this position

00:19that he is in when they come from the place of privilege

00:24that he is.

00:25Luigi Mangione is from a very wealthy family in Maryland,

00:31was raised very in a great, had a great upbringing, right,

00:36and was valedictorian at his private high school.

00:39Right.

00:40I think a lot when a lot of people

00:41were trying to figure out his motive,

00:42Charles, you say, OK, you know, this

00:43would likely be somebody who struggled with money,

00:45didn't have, you know, wasn't set financially.

00:47That was not the case.

00:48Because it doesn't make sense, because it's not adding up

00:51as part of why people want to know what happened here.

00:54Where did things go?

00:56Where did he make this turn?

00:57Yeah.

00:58Well, we found out something about his,

01:01just exactly what is on the line here for him.

01:03Obviously, his freedom, being in prison

01:07for the rest of his life if he's convicted.

01:09But just his arrest has already cost him

01:12millions and millions of dollars.

01:14And that's because we found out something

01:16about his family's inheritance.

01:19And his grandmother, Mary Mangione,

01:22passed away last year.

01:24And what we found out is that the details of her will,

01:27she has spelled out things that I don't think

01:30she was being prophetic when she put these clauses

01:35into her will.

01:36But she had no time for people in her family crossing the law,

01:43crossing the line with the law.

01:45Exactly right, Charles.

01:46So she had a provision.

01:47It appears it's a little difficult to tell

01:49exactly how much money she was worth the time

01:51that she died in 2023.

01:53But it's somewhere north of $30 million.

01:55And it could be as high as over $100 million.

01:59She left it to her 10 children, including Luigi's father.

02:03And eventually, that money would trickle down

02:05to the other descendants, the grandchildren.

02:07But she included in the will a very specific clause

02:11that we haven't really seen before,

02:13which gave the trustees, there are four trustees,

02:16Luigi's father being one of them, the discretion

02:19and encouraged them that if any of the grandchildren

02:22were to ever be charged, indicted, or convicted

02:27of a crime, that they be excluded from the will.

02:30And she specifically said, in the case of a violent crime

02:34or a heinous crime, she strongly encouraged the trustees

02:37to exclude the descendants, which would obviously

02:39now include Luigi.

02:41So just the fact that he's been charged with the murder

02:44is enough for him to be cut off from the family's money.

02:47And look, we're still trying to sort out

02:51exactly what his relationship was with his family.

02:55And we know he's been estranged from them

02:57for several months at least.

03:00But this now means that he could be cut off.

03:03Now, Jason, it is up to, you said it's up to,

03:06the trustees have discretion.

03:08One of those trustees is his father.

03:10Yeah, it is an interesting position

03:12because there's no innocent until proven guilty in her will

03:16and she can do whatever she wants with her will.

03:17She's not waiting to make sure that there's a conviction.

03:20She's saying even at the time of just the charge,

03:22they can cut him off.

03:23Presumably his inheritance could be used

03:26to pay for his defense, which will likely run

03:29into the hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars

03:31by the end of the day.

03:33And so, I mean, this is a wealthy family.

03:35They'll find assets in other places,

03:36but nevertheless, it's interesting.

03:39Yeah, Jason, is it just up?

03:40I mean, is this solely a decision that the trustees,

03:43including his dad, will make?

03:45I mean, can they just completely ignore

03:47grandma's instructions if they want to?

03:49Yeah, they're not really phrased as instructions, Mike.

03:51They are phrased as wishes.

03:54She says, I would like for you,

03:56I forgot the exact wording, but something along the lines

03:58of I strongly encourage you.

04:00But ultimately, she could have said,

04:02absolutely, I refused and no money will trickle

04:05to any descendant.

04:06But she was bright enough to know that there are nuances

04:08in every situation and I don't wanna have

04:10that kind of restriction, so she left it to the trustees

04:12to do what they will.

04:13Which means Luigi's father now has to figure out

04:17if this is one of those nuances.

04:19And it almost puts him in a position of being

04:22judge and jury, at least, of his son,

04:25at least in the instance of his inheritance.

04:27Is this a nuanced thing?

04:30I mean, I guess if his father doesn't believe

04:33Luigi did it, I guess even if he believed he did it,

04:37he could still make the decision.

04:38Yeah, I was gonna say, even if my kid did a crime,

04:41there's no amount of money I wouldn't spend

04:42to see them get the best treatment they possibly could get.

04:44But also, remember, there are four trustees.

04:46They're gonna have, this is a point of negotiation.

04:49One of them can't just override the other three.

04:51So, I mean, who knows what the inner workings

04:54of this family are?

04:55And it could be that it's a negotiation

04:57between the various trustees.
