PTV Sports is back with Ms. Rose Montreal.
00:11
She is the first female commissioner of pro basketball in the Philippines.
00:17
Ms. Rose, welcome to PTV Sports.
00:20
Good morning Rafael and Meg.
00:24
Trivia, I told Meg when I saw her backstage,
00:30
it's nice to see her again.
00:31
Because the last time I saw her, the last time she interviewed me,
00:35
she was like, you know, she's a budding sports reporter.
00:40
And now, like what I told her a while ago,
00:43
she'll be the next Dayan Castillejo in terms of sports broadcasting.
00:47
Wow, thank you so much.
00:48
Thank you very much.
00:49
Such an honor coming from you, Ms. Rose.
00:52
Ms. Rose, first off, you're known to support homegrown talents,
00:57
to discover homegrown talents.
00:59
And now you have what we call the NBL Youth.
01:02
Can you tell us more about this?
01:04
Yeah, NBL Youth is actually one of the subcategory of National Basketball League, Philippines.
01:12
We started in 2018.
01:14
We started NBL Youth in 2019, right after our first season for NBL, Philippines.
01:20
And then from there, we already had five seasons for NBL Youth.
01:27
And most of our alumni are now playing for Junior NCAA, Junior UAAP,
01:35
and some are playing in the UAAP and NCAA now.
01:38
Ms. Rose, we know that there are a lot of developmental leagues here in our country.
01:44
Because, of course, the Philippines is a basketball crazy nation.
01:48
Yes, it is.
01:49
But we just want to ask, what is the difference between NBL Youth and other developmental leagues in our country?
01:56
Okay, if you were to ask me about the difference of NBL Youth from the other,
02:01
you know, everywhere we go, there's basketball league.
02:06
We start training kids from 10 under, 10 under, 12 under, it's under NBL kids.
02:13
And then 14, 16 under, it's under NBL teens.
02:17
And now the 19 under category is already part of the 21 under next generation or developmental league.
02:23
The only difference that I can say, or peculiar difference from other youth leagues is that
02:31
the technical side, the rules that govern the game,
02:39
is somehow similar to how we govern the rules of our professional league, which is NBL Pilipinas.
02:46
That's why a lot of our alumni from NBL Youth, like Lancer Khan,
02:50
who's now part of the Mythical Five, was never an awardee.
02:55
He was not even part of the Mythical Five when he was playing for Luwid Kapampangan
03:01
under the 21 under category.
03:04
But now, you know, he's really very successful.
03:07
He even bagged the conference MVP in season 2023.
03:13
So, it's a different feeling that your alumni are now playing in the sports league that you also own.
03:22
You know, we have Andre Rito.
03:25
When he played in the NBL Youth, their team never won a single game.
03:30
But now, he's a homegrown hoop hero of Camarines Sur in Naga.
03:35
We also have Kian Fontanilla, who played with us in NBL Nueva Ecija team.
03:42
And now, he's been getting a lot of BPG awards during the game.
03:48
The best player of the game awardee every time Nueva Ecija wins in the NBL.
03:54
Ms. Roso, this is not like a basketball academy.
03:57
All the age groups are already there.
04:01
You're already a part of NBL Youth.
04:04
What are the programs that you have for these basketball athletes
04:08
that you can support them from the age group?
04:12
Young age, unprofessional.
04:15
Meg Rafi, one of the projects that we're launching in January 2025.
04:21
We have two ex-basketball legends.
04:24
One is Aguilas legend himself, Jeff Chan.
04:28
We're launching a shooting and shooting skills academy for kids.
04:33
It's also their way of giving back to the community.
04:37
Jeff Chan had around 16 years playing for the professional league
04:41
plus his experience playing in the collegiate league in FEU.
04:47
Brian Faundo, a known big man from the PBA
04:52
is also giving back to the community
04:54
by facilitating the big man's academy for NBL Youth.
04:59
I will have to add on what I said a while ago.
05:02
What is the difference?
05:04
From us, we train children 10 under.
05:08
You don't provide them balls that professional players use.
05:13
We do it scientifically.
05:16
It's also one way of giving back to the community.
05:19
Both Sir Edward and I are very thankful to the PBA
05:22
for the experience that they gave us
05:24
and this experience we're using right now
05:27
in running our own professional league.
05:29
It's really a way of giving back to the community.
05:32
Just like Jeff Chan and Brian Faundo.
05:36
To follow up with my question,
05:38
you've mentioned about PBA.
05:40
Do you collaborate with other basketball organizations
05:43
for the NBL programs?
05:45
Not really collaborate with other basketball organizations.
05:49
But of course, NBL Pilipinas is a member
05:52
of the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas.
05:56
With Jeff Chan and Brian Faundo,
05:59
it's their personal goal and advocacy
06:06
to give back to the community.
06:08
By teaching kids,
06:10
Brian will concentrate on developing big men
06:13
because it's really very hard.
06:15
I believe Rafi is playing basketball also.
06:18
So in a basketball team,
06:20
for you to form a team,
06:22
you need 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 players.
06:24
Some of the players right now,
06:26
they play 1 to 5.
06:28
The great Tim Cohn,
06:30
head coach of Gilas.
06:32
I remember reading this interview
06:35
that when Kevin asked Coach Tim Cohn,
06:37
Coach, which position will I be playing?
06:40
Tim Cohn told him,
06:41
you'll be playing 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
06:43
But you know,
06:45
the big man in the team,
06:47
I experienced that even with the PBA.
06:51
We also handle PCCL.
06:53
Both Sir Edward and I handle PCCL
06:55
helping basketball legend Jolly Pano
06:58
and the late Mr. Ray of PCCL.
07:03
It's really hard to find a big man,
07:05
especially in schools.
07:07
So if we start training children
07:11
as young as 10 years old,
07:13
you'll really see it
07:15
because we evaluate kids
07:17
if you're just for the wing,
07:19
for the guard, for the big man.
07:21
So we're working closely with Jeff
07:23
and Bryan Faundo
07:25
to further develop talents
07:29
because even with a lot of leagues,
07:31
our talents are still lacking
07:33
in the Philippines.
07:35
Ms. Rose, I want to say
07:37
that your academy
07:39
has a category
07:41
for every single type of player.
07:44
But like you said,
07:46
our basketball now,
07:48
we're moving towards
07:50
positionless basketball.
07:52
Just like what we discussed
07:54
about Kevin Kembao,
07:56
you have to learn
07:58
every single position.
08:00
Well-rounded.
08:02
And even the bigs now,
08:04
Ms. Rose, they can play guard.
08:06
They have guard skills.
08:08
So it's a big thing
08:10
in your opinion,
08:12
for the kids to learn
08:14
in the academy,
08:16
it's a big thing
08:18
for their development.
08:21
With all due respect
08:23
to the players,
08:25
to the coaches who conduct
08:27
camps and clinics,
08:29
because
08:31
we have continuity
08:33
per module.
08:35
As Jeff Chan told me,
08:37
if I may share with you,
08:39
Ms. Rose, as long as it doesn't exceed
08:41
my standards,
08:43
we won't join the league.
08:45
Because right after the academy,
08:47
Jeff and Bryan plans to
08:49
put up their own team to compete also
08:51
with NBL Youth for kids, teens
08:53
and next-gen category.
08:55
As he said,
08:57
it's not about
08:59
just conducting.
09:01
You can't just skip ups.
09:03
You need to have a gauge.
09:05
You need to have metrics.
09:07
Like what we said,
09:09
basketball is a science.
09:11
So we have to treat it like a science.
09:13
In terms of coaches,
09:15
who are the coaches
09:17
in our youth program?
09:19
Bryan will be filling
09:21
in his own teammates
09:23
from his
09:25
former teams and then Jeff
09:27
will really handle it personally.
09:29
That's why Jeff would like to
09:31
limit the session or the
09:33
module maximum of 10
09:35
students because
09:37
he really wants to be the only one.
09:39
Hands-on.
09:41
You will really admire Jeff
09:43
and Bryan because of their advocacy
09:45
Honestly speaking,
09:47
they're getting big
09:49
pace already. Bryan is into
09:51
business. Same way with
09:53
Jeff. I believe Jeff is not
09:55
retired yet.
09:57
For them to
09:59
think that we want to
10:01
give back to the community
10:03
and to offer their
10:05
services to the NBL Filipinas.
10:07
It's really an honor for us.
10:09
I really had very good working
10:11
relationships with them
10:13
during the time that I was
10:15
in the elite league.
10:17
It's all about relationship
10:19
and shared
10:21
passion, shared
10:23
advocacy, and
10:25
as I said,
10:27
we don't need to prove anything
10:29
in the basketball industry anymore.
10:31
You know that, Meg. But for me,
10:33
I would like to leave the legacy
10:35
that we developed
10:37
a lot of players
10:39
especially the goal of
10:42
NBL Filipinas.
10:44
Even if they can't reach the elite league,
10:46
they can't reach PBA
10:48
because PBA can only accommodate as much
10:50
because they only have 12 teams.
10:52
Elite plus the others
10:54
can't give a chance to go
10:56
Korea, to go Japan, to go
10:58
in other country. We have
11:00
developed local hoop heroes
11:02
that their community can treasure
11:04
that their community, the younger generation
11:06
in their city or in their province
11:08
can look up to and be an
11:10
inspiration in the future.
11:12
Ms. Rose,
11:14
the youth development
11:16
here in basketball,
11:18
earlier you mentioned
11:20
players that during their
11:22
junior years, they didn't perform much
11:24
but when they passed the pros,
11:26
they became hometown heroes
11:28
as you said. So, do you believe
11:30
that the experience that they gained
11:32
with being
11:34
the ones that they can reach
11:36
from an early age,
11:38
is the reason why they were successful
11:40
when they passed? Maybe one of the
11:42
reason that I can share is that
11:44
like what I mentioned earlier,
11:46
the same rules that govern the pro
11:48
league is the same rules
11:50
that we use in the youth
11:52
category. So, it's a lot
11:54
easier for the alumni to jump
11:56
to the professional league once
11:58
they're qualified already
12:00
because it's the same
12:02
so they don't change.
12:04
That's probably the secret
12:06
to the success of that.
12:08
Ms. Rose, since this is open
12:10
to everyone, any
12:12
or every basketball athletes
12:14
all over the world can actually
12:16
or over the Philippines can join,
12:18
do you see any promising athletes
12:20
from the provinces?
12:22
Actually, Meg, that's why we joined
12:24
NBL Pilipinas because
12:26
it's hard to categorize homegrown
12:28
honestly speaking.
12:30
But what makes NBL Pilipinas different
12:32
again from the other league is that
12:34
we play purely homegrown
12:36
and what do you mean by purely homegrown?
12:38
During the earlier days,
12:40
of course, before you
12:42
conceptualize, you look for
12:44
parameters on how to define
12:46
a real homegrown. But after
12:48
several years
12:50
or several conferences, several
12:52
seasons that had passed,
12:54
we got the secret. And what is the secret?
12:56
The player who should be playing
12:58
or representing the city
13:00
or the province that he will play for
13:03
he was born
13:05
in the city or province that he's
13:07
representing. So that's the strict
13:09
definition, those are our strict parameters.
13:11
So basically, we will say
13:13
if you have seen
13:15
or developed, if I may
13:17
share, Dominic Fajardo who now plays
13:19
for NLEX Road Warriors,
13:21
used to play for NBL Pilipinas.
13:23
So
13:25
I'm really very hopeful
13:27
with all this advocacy,
13:29
with all these goals that we have
13:31
because the league is goal-centered.
13:33
It's not just putting up a league
13:35
and, you know, just to say that
13:37
you have a league. Because it's embarrassing
13:39
for PBA, when they see
13:41
Edward and Rose are there
13:43
and then, you know, we're not keeping to the standards
13:45
of the experience that we got
13:47
from PBA. So
13:49
all of us are goal-centered
13:51
and once you're goal-centered,
13:53
you know, gauge
13:55
the metrics of success
13:57
or if you achieved the goal
13:59
that you projected.
14:01
Ms. Rose, I believe we have
14:03
time for just
14:05
one more question. But I think
14:07
you have expansion
14:09
plans for this league. So very
14:11
quick, what is this? Yeah, coming from
14:13
the success story of
14:15
NBL Pilipinas, the homegrown basketball,
14:17
we are now
14:19
planning to launch NBL
14:21
which is the National Volleyball League.
14:23
So, we know that
14:25
the superstars in volleyball
14:27
coming from different schools, coming from
14:29
different cities or provinces. So, why
14:31
not put up your own
14:33
volleyball heroes
14:35
in your particular city
14:37
and provinces. So,
14:39
it's really coming soon, first quarter of
14:41
2025. Finally,
14:43
Ms. Rose, message to your supporters
14:45
and fans of NBL.
14:47
Yeah, first of all, thank you so much.
14:49
We have already
14:51
succeeded the seven-year each
14:53
because it's already our seventh season
14:55
and I guess we're going to finish
14:57
or end the conference on a high note
14:59
having
15:01
the rivalry of Taguig and Kamsur
15:03
in the finals. Tomorrow,
15:05
we're leaving for Kamsur because
15:07
it's game three and it's their home
15:09
game advantage. So,
15:11
maraming salamat
15:13
and I would like to make an appeal to all
15:15
our LGUs. Let's
15:17
put our
15:19
developmental funds for the youth
15:21
in the proper
15:23
project.
15:25
Hindi ko sinasabing NBL yung
15:27
sagot doon but with the success
15:29
story of Kamsur,
15:31
Taguig, Pampanga,
15:33
Nueva Ecija, I
15:35
believe their success story can be
15:37
replicated by other LGUs
15:39
as well. Maraming salamat.
15:41
Maraming salamat po, Ms. Rose Montreal.
