00:11She is the first female commissioner of pro basketball in the Philippines.

00:17Ms. Rose, welcome to PTV Sports.

00:20Good morning Rafael and Meg.

00:24Trivia, I told Meg when I saw her backstage,

00:30it's nice to see her again.

00:31Because the last time I saw her, the last time she interviewed me,

00:35she was like, you know, she's a budding sports reporter.

00:40And now, like what I told her a while ago,

00:43she'll be the next Dayan Castillejo in terms of sports broadcasting.

00:47Wow, thank you so much.

00:48Thank you very much.

00:49Such an honor coming from you, Ms. Rose.

00:52Ms. Rose, first off, you're known to support homegrown talents,

00:57to discover homegrown talents.

00:59And now you have what we call the NBL Youth.

01:02Can you tell us more about this?

01:04Yeah, NBL Youth is actually one of the subcategory of National Basketball League, Philippines.

01:12We started in 2018.

01:14We started NBL Youth in 2019, right after our first season for NBL, Philippines.

01:20And then from there, we already had five seasons for NBL Youth.

01:27And most of our alumni are now playing for Junior NCAA, Junior UAAP,

01:35and some are playing in the UAAP and NCAA now.

01:38Ms. Rose, we know that there are a lot of developmental leagues here in our country.

01:44Because, of course, the Philippines is a basketball crazy nation.

01:48Yes, it is.

01:49But we just want to ask, what is the difference between NBL Youth and other developmental leagues in our country?

01:56Okay, if you were to ask me about the difference of NBL Youth from the other,

02:01you know, everywhere we go, there's basketball league.

02:06We start training kids from 10 under, 10 under, 12 under, it's under NBL kids.

02:13And then 14, 16 under, it's under NBL teens.

02:17And now the 19 under category is already part of the 21 under next generation or developmental league.

02:23The only difference that I can say, or peculiar difference from other youth leagues is that

02:31the technical side, the rules that govern the game,

02:39is somehow similar to how we govern the rules of our professional league, which is NBL Pilipinas.

02:46That's why a lot of our alumni from NBL Youth, like Lancer Khan,

02:50who's now part of the Mythical Five, was never an awardee.

02:55He was not even part of the Mythical Five when he was playing for Luwid Kapampangan

03:01under the 21 under category.

03:04But now, you know, he's really very successful.

03:07He even bagged the conference MVP in season 2023.

03:13So, it's a different feeling that your alumni are now playing in the sports league that you also own.

03:22You know, we have Andre Rito.

03:25When he played in the NBL Youth, their team never won a single game.

03:30But now, he's a homegrown hoop hero of Camarines Sur in Naga.

03:35We also have Kian Fontanilla, who played with us in NBL Nueva Ecija team.

03:42And now, he's been getting a lot of BPG awards during the game.

03:48The best player of the game awardee every time Nueva Ecija wins in the NBL.

03:54Ms. Roso, this is not like a basketball academy.

03:57All the age groups are already there.

04:01You're already a part of NBL Youth.

04:04What are the programs that you have for these basketball athletes

04:08that you can support them from the age group?

04:12Young age, unprofessional.

04:15Meg Rafi, one of the projects that we're launching in January 2025.

04:21We have two ex-basketball legends.

04:24One is Aguilas legend himself, Jeff Chan.

04:28We're launching a shooting and shooting skills academy for kids.

04:33It's also their way of giving back to the community.

04:37Jeff Chan had around 16 years playing for the professional league

04:41plus his experience playing in the collegiate league in FEU.

04:47Brian Faundo, a known big man from the PBA

04:52is also giving back to the community

04:54by facilitating the big man's academy for NBL Youth.

04:59I will have to add on what I said a while ago.

05:02What is the difference?

05:04From us, we train children 10 under.

05:08You don't provide them balls that professional players use.

05:13We do it scientifically.

05:16It's also one way of giving back to the community.

05:19Both Sir Edward and I are very thankful to the PBA

05:22for the experience that they gave us

05:24and this experience we're using right now

05:27in running our own professional league.

05:29It's really a way of giving back to the community.

05:32Just like Jeff Chan and Brian Faundo.

05:36To follow up with my question,

05:38you've mentioned about PBA.

05:40Do you collaborate with other basketball organizations

05:43for the NBL programs?

05:45Not really collaborate with other basketball organizations.

05:49But of course, NBL Pilipinas is a member

05:52of the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas.

05:56With Jeff Chan and Brian Faundo,

05:59it's their personal goal and advocacy

06:06to give back to the community.

06:08By teaching kids,

06:10Brian will concentrate on developing big men

06:13because it's really very hard.

06:15I believe Rafi is playing basketball also.

06:18So in a basketball team,

06:20for you to form a team,

06:22you need 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 players.

06:24Some of the players right now,

06:26they play 1 to 5.

06:28The great Tim Cohn,

06:30head coach of Gilas.

06:32I remember reading this interview

06:35that when Kevin asked Coach Tim Cohn,

06:37Coach, which position will I be playing?

06:40Tim Cohn told him,

06:41you'll be playing 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

06:43But you know,

06:45the big man in the team,

06:47I experienced that even with the PBA.

06:51We also handle PCCL.

06:53Both Sir Edward and I handle PCCL

06:55helping basketball legend Jolly Pano

06:58and the late Mr. Ray of PCCL.

07:03It's really hard to find a big man,

07:05especially in schools.

07:07So if we start training children

07:11as young as 10 years old,

07:13you'll really see it

07:15because we evaluate kids

07:17if you're just for the wing,

07:19for the guard, for the big man.

07:21So we're working closely with Jeff

07:23and Bryan Faundo

07:25to further develop talents

07:29because even with a lot of leagues,

07:31our talents are still lacking

07:33in the Philippines.

07:35Ms. Rose, I want to say

07:37that your academy

07:39has a category

07:41for every single type of player.

07:44But like you said,

07:46our basketball now,

07:48we're moving towards

07:50positionless basketball.

07:52Just like what we discussed

07:54about Kevin Kembao,

07:56you have to learn

07:58every single position.

08:00Well-rounded.

08:02And even the bigs now,

08:04Ms. Rose, they can play guard.

08:06They have guard skills.

08:08So it's a big thing

08:10in your opinion,

08:12for the kids to learn

08:14in the academy,

08:16it's a big thing

08:18for their development.

08:21With all due respect

08:23to the players,

08:25to the coaches who conduct

08:27camps and clinics,

08:29because

08:31we have continuity

08:33per module.

08:35As Jeff Chan told me,

08:37if I may share with you,

08:39Ms. Rose, as long as it doesn't exceed

08:41my standards,

08:43we won't join the league.

08:45Because right after the academy,

08:47Jeff and Bryan plans to

08:49put up their own team to compete also

08:51with NBL Youth for kids, teens

08:53and next-gen category.

08:55As he said,

08:57it's not about

08:59just conducting.

09:01You can't just skip ups.

09:03You need to have a gauge.

09:05You need to have metrics.

09:07Like what we said,

09:09basketball is a science.

09:11So we have to treat it like a science.

09:13In terms of coaches,

09:15who are the coaches

09:17in our youth program?

09:19Bryan will be filling

09:21in his own teammates

09:23from his

09:25former teams and then Jeff

09:27will really handle it personally.

09:29That's why Jeff would like to

09:31limit the session or the

09:33module maximum of 10

09:35students because

09:37he really wants to be the only one.

09:43and Bryan because of their advocacy

09:45Honestly speaking,

09:47they're getting big

09:49pace already. Bryan is into

09:53Jeff. I believe Jeff is not

09:55retired yet.

09:57For them to

09:59think that we want to

10:01give back to the community

10:03and to offer their

10:05services to the NBL Filipinas.

10:07It's really an honor for us.

10:09I really had very good working

10:11relationships with them

10:13during the time that I was

10:15in the elite league.

10:17It's all about relationship

10:19and shared

10:21passion, shared

10:23advocacy, and

10:25as I said,

10:27we don't need to prove anything

10:29in the basketball industry anymore.

10:31You know that, Meg. But for me,

10:33I would like to leave the legacy

10:35that we developed

10:37a lot of players

10:39especially the goal of

10:42NBL Filipinas.

10:44Even if they can't reach the elite league,

10:46they can't reach PBA

10:48because PBA can only accommodate as much

10:50because they only have 12 teams.

10:52Elite plus the others

10:54can't give a chance to go

10:56Korea, to go Japan, to go

10:58in other country. We have

11:00developed local hoop heroes

11:02that their community can treasure

11:04that their community, the younger generation

11:06in their city or in their province

11:08can look up to and be an

11:10inspiration in the future.

11:12Ms. Rose,

11:14the youth development

11:16here in basketball,

11:18earlier you mentioned

11:20players that during their

11:22junior years, they didn't perform much

11:24but when they passed the pros,

11:26they became hometown heroes

11:28as you said. So, do you believe

11:30that the experience that they gained

11:32with being

11:34the ones that they can reach

11:36from an early age,

11:38is the reason why they were successful

11:40when they passed? Maybe one of the

11:42reason that I can share is that

11:44like what I mentioned earlier,

11:46the same rules that govern the pro

11:48league is the same rules

11:50that we use in the youth

11:52category. So, it's a lot

11:54easier for the alumni to jump

11:56to the professional league once

11:58they're qualified already

12:00because it's the same

12:02so they don't change.

12:04That's probably the secret

12:06to the success of that.

12:08Ms. Rose, since this is open

12:10to everyone, any

12:12or every basketball athletes

12:14all over the world can actually

12:16or over the Philippines can join,

12:18do you see any promising athletes

12:20from the provinces?

12:22Actually, Meg, that's why we joined

12:24NBL Pilipinas because

12:26it's hard to categorize homegrown

12:28honestly speaking.

12:30But what makes NBL Pilipinas different

12:32again from the other league is that

12:34we play purely homegrown

12:36and what do you mean by purely homegrown?

12:38During the earlier days,

12:40of course, before you

12:42conceptualize, you look for

12:44parameters on how to define

12:46a real homegrown. But after

12:48several years

12:50or several conferences, several

12:52seasons that had passed,

12:54we got the secret. And what is the secret?

12:56The player who should be playing

12:58or representing the city

13:00or the province that he will play for

13:03he was born

13:05in the city or province that he's

13:07representing. So that's the strict

13:09definition, those are our strict parameters.

13:11So basically, we will say

13:13if you have seen

13:15or developed, if I may

13:17share, Dominic Fajardo who now plays

13:19for NLEX Road Warriors,

13:21used to play for NBL Pilipinas.

13:23So

13:25I'm really very hopeful

13:27with all this advocacy,

13:29with all these goals that we have

13:31because the league is goal-centered.

13:33It's not just putting up a league

13:35and, you know, just to say that

13:37you have a league. Because it's embarrassing

13:39for PBA, when they see

13:41Edward and Rose are there

13:43and then, you know, we're not keeping to the standards

13:45of the experience that we got

13:47from PBA. So

13:49all of us are goal-centered

13:51and once you're goal-centered,

13:53you know, gauge

13:55the metrics of success

13:57or if you achieved the goal

13:59that you projected.

14:01Ms. Rose, I believe we have

14:03time for just

14:05one more question. But I think

14:07you have expansion

14:09plans for this league. So very

14:11quick, what is this? Yeah, coming from

14:13the success story of

14:15NBL Pilipinas, the homegrown basketball,

14:17we are now

14:19planning to launch NBL

14:21which is the National Volleyball League.

14:23So, we know that

14:25the superstars in volleyball

14:27coming from different schools, coming from

14:29different cities or provinces. So, why

14:31not put up your own

14:33volleyball heroes

14:35in your particular city

14:37and provinces. So,

14:39it's really coming soon, first quarter of

14:412025. Finally,

14:43Ms. Rose, message to your supporters

14:45and fans of NBL.

14:47Yeah, first of all, thank you so much.

14:49We have already

14:51succeeded the seven-year each

14:53because it's already our seventh season

14:55and I guess we're going to finish

14:57or end the conference on a high note

14:59having

15:01the rivalry of Taguig and Kamsur

15:03in the finals. Tomorrow,

15:05we're leaving for Kamsur because

15:07it's game three and it's their home

15:09game advantage. So,

15:11maraming salamat

15:13and I would like to make an appeal to all

15:15our LGUs. Let's

15:17put our

15:19developmental funds for the youth

15:21in the proper

15:23project.

15:33Nueva Ecija, I

15:35believe their success story can be

15:37replicated by other LGUs
