Hi there, Storm Dhara arrives this weekend bringing a spell of very disruptive wind and
00:07
rain.
00:08
Now, the wind and rain overnight tonight isn't Storm Dhara but could also cause disruption
00:12
as it sweeps through quickly.
00:14
By late evening the heaviest of the rain has moved through.
00:17
Winds stay strong for a time overnight, 50-60 mph wind gusts, but by the end of the night
00:24
those winds are starting to ease as a ridge of higher pressure builds in and for many
00:28
clear skies will lead to a chill in the air first thing Friday, mid-single figures in
00:33
many places.
00:34
There will also be a few showers, northern and western Scotland for example, one or two
00:38
into Northern Ireland and north-west England, but away from the showers plenty of sunshine.
00:42
Friday morning at least is a decent morning with plenty of sunshine and it stays dry and
00:49
bright in the east throughout the day, but further west the rain sets in and this ahead
00:55
of Storm Dhara is going to turn increasingly heavy through the afternoon for Northern
01:00
Ireland, western Scotland, parts of western England and Wales.
01:03
The winds will also be picking up at this stage with those winds developing widely and
01:09
gales reaching many parts of the UK overnight.
01:13
But as it turns windier it will also turn milder towards the south-west, 12C, whilst
01:17
we keep the colder air further east.
01:21
Now it's on Friday night that the worst of the weather moves in, Storm Dhara pushing
01:27
in and moving across central parts of the UK bringing widespread gales and the risk
01:34
in places of some very disruptive winds as it continues to deepen on its passage across
01:39
the UK.
01:40
One of the issues is that pressure will be building to the west as Storm Dhara clears
01:45
through and that increases the pressure gradient or in other words it increases the number
01:52
of isobars on the graphic there leading to strengthening winds as Storm Dhara moves through.
01:58
Now the rain will fall as snow above 300m for Scotland but it will be heavy rain at
02:02
lower levels across southern Scotland and Northern Ireland and then further spells of
02:06
rain moving through western England and Wales as the night goes on and as Saturday begins.
02:13
The winds will be picking up all night as well with those gales developing and so yeah
02:17
it's not going to be quite as chilly but it's certainly going to be a noisy night for many
02:21
of us with wet and windy weather moving through and affecting all parts by dawn.
02:28
Disruptive conditions then on Saturday morning with the risk of increasing winds, widespread
02:34
gales and spells of wet weather leading to localised flooding.
02:38
The risk of 30mm widely across western parts of the UK especially for Wales and Northern
02:44
Ireland where the rain totals could reach 60 or more millimetres so the risk of disruption
02:50
from that and as the spells of rain move through the wind continues to strengthen so it's going
02:56
to feel unpleasant basically on Saturday afternoon, highs of 8 or 9 Celsius.
03:02
Here's the wind gusts in more detail as Storm Dhara moves through.
03:06
You can see widely gusts of 60 miles an hour across Northern Ireland, much of England and
03:11
Wales, southern and central as well as western Scotland but it's across parts of Northern
03:16
Ireland, south-west Scotland, Wales and western England where the wind gusts could reach 70
03:21
miles an hour inland, perhaps even 80 miles an hour or more around some exposed coasts
03:26
that could cause significant disruption.
03:29
Travel disruption, power cuts as well as damage to buildings and dangerous conditions around
03:33
coasts with large waves as well as flying debris and that's why there's an amber warning
03:39
in force for south-west Scotland, Northern Ireland, parts of Wales and western England
03:44
with a broader yellow warning elsewhere across much of the UK.
03:47
We'll keep you updated on all the latest warnings and forecasts and you can follow those updates
03:51
on the Met Office YouTube channel or of course head to the website and the app for all the
03:55
latest on the warnings.
03:56
Bye bye.
