‘Everything’s closing’: what’s happening to Welsh nightlife?

We’re in Cardiff asking people if they’ve noticed bars, clubs and pubs closing around them, and what they think has happened to our nightlife.

00:00I mean, I'm from Newport, so everything is closed down, not just the bars, nightclubs,

00:06the shops, everything. I think this is like a knock-on effect from the death of the high

00:10street. Again, it's sort of the taxation on the bars and alcohol, I mean, it's really

00:19driven them all out of business.

00:21And then when I hear something, even though I live in the East Midlands, like the moon

00:23closing down, and especially after battles to save Wallmanby Street, I feel really sad

00:29about it. I mean, I think it's good that Cardiff Council have kind of got a music strategy.

00:35Yeah, I work in a pub, and yeah, when we're quiet, it's quiet. If no one's in, we close.

00:44There's no point in staying open, but it's such a shame to see so many pubs and clubs

00:48closing. But the cost of everything, I think, you know, I think COVID had a big impact on

00:56bars, hospitality, everything.
