00:00Welcome to the Insider, the show that gives you another side of Big Brother.
00:26And let's face it, too much Big Brother is never enough.
00:30Every Friday night we'll be bringing you the inside info, the rumours, the opinions, the fan clubs, everything that's happening outside the house.
00:38To keep up with it all, you need an insider.
00:41And I was in the house myself with a bunch of other guinea pigs for a week before the others went in.
00:46We ate in the house, we showered in the house, well, outside the house, and did just about everything that the housemates are doing right now.
00:54Well, except for Carlo.
00:56Now, I was only in the house for 24 hours, and I'd already started eating my own shoes, but some of these housemates are going to be in there for 12 whole weeks.
01:07What are they going to do when they run out of shoes?
01:09All the housemates are now inside, and here's what happened in their very first week.
01:16In the beginning, Big Brother decreed that there be rain, and there was rain.
01:21Look how lonely the gods are!
01:23Then there was Benjamin, and he was having the time of his life.
01:29In the parallel universe, things were warming up, but Ben's was a lonely existence, until Big Brother brought forth Joanne.
01:39Over in the square house, the pack gained a leader with the appearance of Vincent.
01:44Vincent, the structural engineer, guessed the existence of another house, and was probably wondering if he was in the right one.
01:50Is this it?
01:51Yeah!
01:53And in the roundhouse, Jo's relief was pretty obvious.
01:57Hello!
01:57Hey!
02:00But then, where's the date?
02:01It's been inside, because I think he just...
02:02Hey!
02:03Chrissy and Daniel increased Jo's comfort zone.
02:06Hi!
02:08And Saxon, showing up, made the square girls very happy.
02:13Hey, Saxon!
02:14Canada!
02:16But it was Leah who established that they were not alone.
02:19Gotta love Leah.
02:23The best thing about Big Brother is talking about it with your mates.
02:26So, I've got some of my mates here to talk about the housemate's first week.
02:31First up, from my right here, we have Ciel.
02:36Great to have you, Ciel.
02:36Hello, hello, gorgeous.
02:37Good to be with you.
02:38Glamboyant comedian.
02:39Hey, thank you.
02:41From the Herald Sun in Melbourne, Luke Dennehy.
02:44Hey, Luke.
02:44Hi, Tim.
02:44How are you?
02:45Very well.
02:45MW's Fleur Michele.
02:48Hey, Fleur.
02:49Hi, Tim.
02:50Nice to have you here today.
02:51Nice to have you, my mate.
02:53Mr. Peter Timms, former housemate, and now with TV Week.
02:57Hey, Peter.
02:57G'day, mate.
02:58How are you?
02:58Very well.
02:59Good to see you.
03:00Former housemate, Sarah.
03:02Hey, Sarah.
03:03Hey.
03:03Great to be back.
03:04And the flamboyant media commentator himself, Party Pazlow.
03:10Hey, Party.
03:11Flamboyant.
03:12Party, party, party.
03:13Thank you, my sister.
03:15You, the audience, have told us on Big Brother Online who the most popular housemates are so
03:20far.
03:20And the results are wide and ever-changing.
03:23But as of this minute, Regina and Joanne are topping the poll.
03:28There they are.
03:2921 and 19 percent.
03:31That's the popularity there.
03:33So, insiders, is that accurate?
03:36Let's find out.
03:38I guess the first person to talk about would be the magnificent Regina.
03:41Let's see the week she's had.
03:43I've got to read all night tonight and hope you stay fine.
03:46I don't care.
03:47As long as you don't snore.
03:49Have you put your robe back on?
03:51We're just all going to be farting today.
03:53What does Snow White do?
03:55She had a poison apple, didn't she?
03:56Wait.
03:57She choked?
03:58No, she just munched on it and munched on the poison.
04:03You've got to love her, haven't you?
04:06What do you think, Fleur?
04:07Regina is fantastic.
04:08And I love the voice.
04:10Very Catherine Kim.
04:11It is very Catherine Kim.
04:12Very, very nice.
04:13She's just going to be coming out with the best quotes.
04:16She's just going to be a media fighter.
04:17They're just going to love her.
04:18The quotes, they've already convinced us tonight that Gullible has been taken out of the dictionary.
04:21And she's totally fallen for it.
04:24And she's such a natural person.
04:26That's what you love.
04:26Very Sarah Marie, I reckon.
04:27Yes.
04:28Very natural.
04:29She's hilarious.
04:29She knows who she is, which is nice.
04:31She may not know everything in the dictionary.
04:32She's not threatening very much.
04:33No, right.
04:34I'd like her a lot more of her name as Regina because I like limericks.
04:40This is a family program.
04:42And that's not enough information.
04:43Now, Joanne, of course, is in the house and very beautiful and glamorous.
04:49Let's have a look at Joanne.
04:52I'm the boss.
04:53You're second in charge.
04:54I appreciate the girls wore the uniforms.
04:55We supplied them, which is good today to work.
04:58So big points for that.
05:02Oh, intelligent girl.
05:05I can be intelligent without them, though.
05:08I didn't say that you couldn't.
05:09Well, part of you wear glasses.
05:14Do they make you smarter?
05:15Sorry?
05:17I think Joanne is very intelligent and she's also very beautiful.
05:21And I think she hates Ben's guts.
05:22Yeah.
05:23Why wouldn't you?
05:24Really?
05:24She really doesn't like being locked in him alone.
05:26When she had the idea that there could have only been two of them in that house.
05:29I mean, just look, when Patrick walked in, she practically went mad.
05:33Jumped.
05:34Did she only take in a bikini?
05:36Did her and Regina only take in bikinis?
05:37Well, that was my plan.
05:38They've done everything in bikinis.
05:40Did you go through their bags?
05:41No.
05:41Yes.
05:42Yes, and that's what I did.
05:44I saw everything they've got and there's still a couple of surprises to come.
05:48Of course, down towards the bottom of the polls is young Vincent.
05:52Let's have a look how Vincent went.
05:56Yeah, it's just over there.
05:58Vincent, not Vince.
05:59Oh, sorry.
06:00It's all right.
06:01What's the full name?
06:02No, it's just Vincent.
06:05Oh, he's a vise.
06:06No, that is absolutely un-Australian.
06:08I'm sorry.
06:08But anyone who won't have a nickname, that is ridiculous.
06:12Call me Vincent.
06:13Who can be bothered?
06:13Really?
06:14I think he's going to be bothered.
06:15I think he looks like he's going to explode.
06:17He's a big tante thrower.
06:19Escape.
06:19Big tante.
06:20He reminds me of Alex.
06:21Everything's going according to plan.
06:23Oh, very scary.
06:23There's a bit of to a car in there.
06:25I can see him maybe be the first one to actually say they're going to leave and actually do
06:28it, follow through on it.
06:29If he spits a dummy, he could walk.
06:32Although he is quite competitive.
06:33But if he spits a dummy, he'll follow through with it.
06:35Do you think he'll be getting on all his nerves?
06:37You guys have seen people.
06:38He's getting on my nerves already.
06:39I don't even know the guy.
06:40He stands out so much.
06:42I don't like him.
06:42Vincent, I just think that the house was never made for one as beautiful as him.
06:46I think he would agree with you as well.
06:50So, well, who knows?
06:51Will Vincent take charge?
06:52Is he going to be the boss?
06:53I think he has already taken charge.
06:54He's so bossy.
06:56Well, it's been a busy week for them all.
06:58When the Insider returns, we'll be looking at what the media thought about the first week
07:03of Big Brother.
07:04And that should be easier because, well, we are the media.
07:12The launch of a new series of Big Brother always makes waves.
07:25But this time it was a tsunami.
07:29NW's Fleur Michel is here to report about what the reporters were reporting about.
07:33Hi, Fleur.
07:33Hi, Tim.
07:34It was a tsunami.
07:35Now, listen, at the beginning of the week, a lot of the talk was about how well the opening
07:38night show rated.
07:402.25 million.
07:41That was huge.
07:42They're all watching you, too.
07:44Oh, yeah.
07:44Your umbrella.
07:45Most of the time when I'm on, they're sort of looking, trying to see the crowd behind
07:48me and find something interesting.
07:50I don't think so.
07:51Yeah.
07:51So short, Tim.
07:53Well, actually, I'm only this big on television.
07:56How short can you get?
07:57Gretel did a fantastic job in the deluge.
08:00She did.
08:01Her make-up was perfect, even though the rain was pouring down.
08:04And her clothes are fantastic.
08:06Armani suit, $100,000 worth of jewels.
08:09That's like the Academy Awards.
08:11That's very nice.
08:11Can you take them back after they get all wet?
08:14Do they take refunds?
08:15I'd take them back if they got all wet.
08:17Maybe you should ask it later.
08:17I'd put them in my pocket.
08:18Yeah.
08:19If the diamonds get wet, do they shrink?
08:22Now, Brett...
08:22I don't think so.
08:23Brett thought he was going in the house.
08:25Big Brother said, uh-uh.
08:27Or somebody said, uh-uh.
08:28Who was it?
08:28Well, look, it was actually the police commissioner of Queensland.
08:32There was a lot of intrigue about Brett, why he didn't appear.
08:3445 minutes before the show, he was due to appear.
08:38Got a call saying that it would be unprofessional for a member of the force to go in, so he didn't.
08:42Oh, now, Ben was a member of the force.
08:45How did he get kicked out?
08:46There was a big hoo-ha about that.
08:47This was a huge story, um, this week.
08:50Look, Ben was arrested for urinating in a public street.
08:55That's classy.
08:55That's classy.
08:57Very nice.
08:58Can't find a toilet?
08:59Well, look...
08:59Not all of us.
09:00He was in front of two women.
09:02He did admit that...
09:03I haven't done that.
09:04No, I haven't done that.
09:05That's all right.
09:06Continue.
09:06No excuse.
09:07No excuse.
09:07Well, he did admit that he was drunk at the time, but there's a lot more to it than that.
09:11In NW coming out next week, we've actually talked to his mother, who says that he was under a lot of stress and strain at the time,
09:17and I bet you can't guess why, either.
09:19Mobster.
09:20One word.
09:21There was a mobster after him at one stage.
09:25This is true.
09:26It's actually very serious.
09:27This guy he was doing an undercover case with, this mobster guy, actually started making threats against his life,
09:33and he was under pressure, and he cracked.
09:36And then he urinated.
09:37And then he urinated.
09:38I can understand that.
09:39If a mobster's after that, it probably went right away.
09:43Perfect chain of events.
09:44Now, in Ben's former life as an undercover cop, no doubt he sent many a crook to a lonely existence,
09:50languishing and solitary.
09:52Big brother decided to give Ben a taste of what that was like.
09:56And old Ben was all by himself, all alone, the lonely guy, doing a bit of a Zsa Zsa Gabor with the hand towel there.
10:07Not much to do.
10:08You're all alone.
10:09You walk around the house.
10:10What do you do?
10:11You get a balloon and party on!
10:13Let's walk!
10:14But when most blokes come out of solitary, it's not to a view like this.
10:23Oh my God.
10:24Come in, how are you?
10:25How are you?
10:25I'm Joey.
10:26I'm Ben, how are you?
10:27Hi Ben.
10:28How are you?
10:28Actually, no, I'll just give you a hug, because I'm really going to be hugging you.
10:33Well, Ben's done his time.
10:34He's got his reward.
10:35He is.
10:36But does he deserve all the bad press he's been getting?
10:38Here's a man who knows him very well.
10:40His law tutor professor, Damien Millen.
10:43Professor, welcome.
10:44Oh, thanks very much.
10:48Now, Damien's made the big change from being a copper to trying to be a lawyer.
10:53How's he coping with that?
10:54I think Ben, as any mature age student, you know, changing careers.
10:58He's obviously embracing his studies very well.
11:00Very dynamic member of my class anyway.
11:02Very robust opinions.
11:04I think he'll do very well.
11:05Is he the noisy one in the class?
11:07Oh, absolutely.
11:08Very, very strong.
11:09Has very strong views about, for example, drugs, murder, these sorts of things.
11:13And I think his time in the police force, all that pressure, will put him in very good
11:18step.
11:19There's a lot of pressure and stress when you're undercover in those things.
11:21And I guess the same sort of pressures that lawyers are in, having to decide, you know,
11:26which BMW to drive.
11:28That's tough.
11:29That's very tough.
11:30Do I use my master card?
11:32These are obviously very important dilemmas.
11:34I think that, I think that, I think ultimately Ben has made that commitment and that's why
11:40mature age students, I think, deserve a lot of respect.
11:43They leave their life of old to pursue new...
11:46Tell us, Damien, how much has he paid you to say all that?
11:48So he's gone from a cop to a lawyer.
11:52All he needs to do is be a politician, straight to hell.
11:55Guaranteed a slot.
11:56New scar salesman, maybe.
11:57Sold!
11:58And he's always got a couple of mates who are mobsters, so you never know.
12:02Do you think he'll get on people's nerves at all?
12:04Well, I think, I think that when he put his opinions forward, people listen.
12:09Whether or not they agree or not, entirely different issue.
12:11They don't get a chance to talk.
12:13It's got nothing to do with a telephone book or, no, no.
12:16Well, look, we've heard what the media thinks and what Ben's professor thinks.
12:19He must be right, he's a professor.
12:21But what do you think?
12:22You can email me at theinsider at bigbrother.optis.com.au.
12:28How else am I supposed to find things out if you don't send me an email?
12:32Incidentally, Ben's popularity rating on Big Brother is, where are we?
12:385% as of now.
12:39But don't forget that poll asks you which housemates you like.
12:43When it's time for nominations, we'll find out who you don't like.
12:47Very different thing.
12:48After the break, someone, everybody likes, Gretel Killeen.
12:51Shall we hear?
12:52On the Insider, we've got cameras hidden in the house
13:01that even Big Brother doesn't know about.
13:12Now, I just had an SMS.
13:16It's party time in the house.
13:18Big Brother has themed it.
13:19It's from Big Brother, the SMS.
13:21The Seven Deadly Sins.
13:23He's provided some very sinful costumes, apparently.
13:26But will any sinful behaviour happen from our housemates?
13:29Who knows?
13:30You too can get SMS updates on your mobile.
13:33Check out www.bigbrother.optis.com.au.
13:38That's where you'll get hooked up for those.
13:40But right now, on the Insider, the housemate's best friend,
13:43please welcome Gretel Killeen.
13:51Now, congratulations first on the launch show.
13:54It's hard enough without the rain coming down.
13:57How were you?
13:58Well, I was very well, thank you.
14:01It's not just me.
14:03You know, I've got this huge team supporting me.
14:06And the rain actually added to the excitement.
14:09I thought the dramatic timing of that was fantastic.
14:12And we had things going on all over the place, surprise after surprise.
14:16It, you know, it's sort of like, I was going to say, it's like giving birth and you ignore
14:19the pain.
14:20Remember, that's a complete fib because you don't.
14:23Probably over to you, Tim.
14:26Well, it was the end of the drought.
14:27It was also the end of the Big Brother drought.
14:29It's been a while.
14:30It has been a while.
14:31And it was, you know, I only meet the housemates for the very first time at that moment.
14:36And I've got a lot to think about.
14:37But the thing I couldn't really work out is that I was always told,
14:41don't put electrical devices near water.
14:44And I was standing there plugged in to the eye of a carrying packs on my back.
14:50Lights.
14:51Oh, we had the fireworks.
14:52That was quite funny.
14:53The fireworks were good.
14:54What, the...
14:55I mean, let's call them sparklers.
14:57I love them.
14:58I mean, they suffered the most.
14:59I heard Fleur say earlier that my hair and make-up survived,
15:02but those poor little sparklers.
15:04It was going to be spectacular.
15:06And it was more of a sound effect than anything else.
15:09But never mind.
15:09Your make-up's the main thing.
15:11Get the sparklers.
15:11Oh, well, as it turns out, yes, what Gretel looks like is the most important thing.
15:16Now, poor old Ben got thrown into the house 24 hours by himself.
15:19Would you have coped with 24 hours by yourself?
15:21What I would definitely have done, if I could hear people on the other side of a wall,
15:27is make contact with them.
15:28Absolutely.
15:29I would make a rope with the sheets from the bed.
15:34I would tie them together, and I would throw it over, and someone would catch it, and I would climb over.
15:42Right.
15:42And they'd let go.
15:44Hopefully not.
15:45Well, I wasn't expecting them to let go.
15:48Thank you, Sarah.
15:49Did you ever have an idea?
15:50They don't want to meet me.
15:51Oh, my dear.
15:52No, I don't see people on the back when he climbs over, and then he sees it's Carlo,
15:58and he goes, scampering back over the other side.
16:01And then, of course, the arrival of Joanne.
16:02Of course, she's very glamorous for Ben.
16:06Would that have been a nice relief, having 24 hours by yourself, then invaded by Joanne?
16:11Well, first of all, you're asking me to be Ben alone.
16:14So now I'm a man alone in a house, imagining a woman who looks like Joanne entering.
16:19How would I feel?
16:20We're just suffering, is it?
16:21Like crap.
16:22Certainly not suffering.
16:24He's king of that pond in his head, I would say.
16:28He was there first, and it's his house.
16:32Well, it's starting to be Carlo's house, only because he won't shut up.
16:36He keeps talking.
16:37Would you cope with Carlo yapping all the time?
16:39Well, I've got children.
16:40Right.
16:41Anyone out there who's got children, you know about this.
16:45It's just, look at me, Mum.
16:47I'm just going to do my shoe up.
16:49Look at me, Mum.
16:50I'm just wandering through the living room.
16:52Look at me.
16:53Look at me.
16:53I'm just doing absolutely nothing.
16:55And so I'm very used to it.
16:57I think I'd probably go and pat him, or give him a task.
17:00Right.
17:00Do you feel like a big sister?
17:01You know, there's a big brother, of course, but big sister?
17:04A sister, I don't know.
17:07An estranged cousin or something?
17:08I'm not sure that I feel like I am a blood relative of these people, because I'm in absolute
17:15wonderment as an audience member, and yet I also have that inside perspective, knowing,
17:21well, Sarah and people agree to this, how incredibly difficult it is going in there.
17:26So I have a whole gamut of emotions as I watch them, because there's a little bit of me that
17:31goes, oh, I can't believe they did that.
17:32Oh, bet they get together.
17:33And then the other part thinks, wow, this is a big thing to do.
17:37And we see Gretel as sort of like a mum or a big sister, because she's your only contact,
17:41as you said in the intro, your only contact with the outside world, and the only other
17:44face that you see on the outside world as well.
17:46Is that how you felt, Sarah?
17:47Yeah, you definitely become part of the family.
17:49Gretel.
17:50We can't wait to see you, because you're sick of everyone else.
17:53Do you have any favourites, or you don't have favourites?
17:57To be honest, I don't know why I don't have favourites.
18:00I have people who momentarily intrigue me, and I say momentarily only until the next
18:05thing that occurs.
18:06I think being a writer, I'm fascinated by the character development.
18:10I'm fascinated trying to predict how people will behave.
18:13And I'm fascinated not only seeing the response of the other housemates to that person's behaviour,
18:19but also the way Australian society responds.
18:21And I think, with their voting, I'm a great fan of the individual thinker.
18:27I love people who just get up and say something, I don't like niceties, I don't like, yeah, I'll
18:33just, well, what about Benjamin and Joanne, that first day, I felt car sick.
18:41Didn't you?
18:43Oh, that's interesting.
18:44And what about you?
18:45Well, that is interesting, Freddie.
18:47Now, this is the third series of Big Brother.
18:49And blokes have won the first two.
18:52The question is, can a girl come out on top?
18:54We'll talk about that right after the break.
18:56But first, before she went into the house, here's what Irina thought about the issue.
19:01I think it's about time that a girl won.
19:04And if it's not me, then I hope it's another girl.
19:06I'd like to see Australia get together behind women and show that we're not just the same
19:13old, same old.
19:13It's a different Big Brother, and it's a different Big Brother outcome.
19:19It's time to go, Sarah Marie.
19:26Oh my gosh!
19:28Oh my gosh!
19:34Welcome back to The Insider.
19:37As we learned earlier, the housemates you love the most are a couple of women, Joanne
19:41and Regina.
19:42It's early days yet, but the question is, can a woman win this Big Brother?
19:47Sarah, what do you think?
19:48Absolutely, I'm so for it.
19:50I think this year there's a better chance than ever, because if you look at the last
19:54two years, the winners, there was a lot of similarities there with them.
19:58So I'm thinking this year, go the girl.
20:01What do you think, Luke?
20:02I'm not quite sure.
20:03I don't know if the Australian public will vote a girl in.
20:06I just think it's a reflection of society at the current moment.
20:09I don't know why, but I hope so.
20:11Yeah, unfortunately I think Luke's right.
20:13I don't think we're quite ready.
20:14We're not quite ready.
20:15We're sort of like, no.
20:17I wanted Sarah Marie to win.
20:20I was devastated.
20:21I thought she was the most popular, but see, she didn't win.
20:23And it wasn't fair, because we would have all switched off without her there.
20:26I think there's a chance that a woman will win, only if the woman is non-threatening.
20:32And then other women voters in the audience might vote her in, which is why Joanne won't
20:37win.
20:37I think women out there are a bit scared of her.
20:39She's too beautiful and too smart.
20:40That's right.
20:41Younger girls in particular can't relate to that beauty.
20:44But why is the goal that it has to be a woman winning?
20:48If you're saying, oh, a woman can win if she's non-threatening, well, aren't we then
20:51just in the same situation where we possibly have people who've slipped under the radar?
20:56I think the person who wins should be the one that we love the most, who's the bravest,
21:00who's the most outrageous, who makes conversation and initiates.
21:04Oh, that's right.
21:05My money's definitely on Chrissy for that one.
21:07She was out there.
21:09There's still that radar thing, so she won't go too early.
21:12She's a big sister to everyone.
21:13She's sensible.
21:14She doesn't take crap from anyone.
21:16And she's the one who's going to take it out at the end.
21:18Someone else has all those qualities, and that's Carlo.
21:21Carlo makes an effort, and he is a classic case in point.
21:29Watch someone.
21:30He may be annoying, and he doesn't know when to shut up.
21:32But we can just pull his microphone level down.
21:35He gets the one who's been dressing as a woman, so that might give him an advantage.
21:39Yes, a cross-dresser, perhaps.
21:40Yeah, he has been putting on dresses.
21:41Give him some time.
21:42I think he'll grow.
21:44Daniel has the third nipple, which is...
21:46That might get him over the line.
21:48There's another one, too.
21:50You lose one.
21:51So, a quick vote.
21:52Sarah, can a woman win?
21:53Yes, absolutely.
21:54Peter?
21:55For sure.
21:55Redhall?
21:56The best person should win, I think.
21:58Good comment.
21:58Very politically correct.
21:59Fleur?
22:00A woman can win, and I think Regina.
22:01She's my pick.
22:02Right.
22:03Luke?
22:03My favourite's Regina, but I'm not sure if a woman can win.
22:06And Ciel?
22:07I'm going to go with Luke and Fleur.
22:08I love Regina, but I just don't think that Australia's ready.
22:12Go, girls.
22:13Come on, girls.
22:14You should be.
22:15You should be.
22:16Regina, Carlo, marriage, live on Big Brother.
22:18Oh, she's already married.
22:20Tim, I've noticed some.
22:21Joanne and Patrick are hanging out a bit together at the moment.
22:24Who?
22:25Okay.
22:25Joanne and Patrick are hanging out quite a bit together.
22:27I know.
22:27There's something going on there, eh?
22:28Well, thanks so much for joining me here tonight, everyone.
22:32She's devastated.
22:33Great to have you here.
22:34Thanks, Sarah, Peter, Gretel.
22:35Tim.
22:36Ciel, Luke, Fleur.
22:38Thanks so much.
22:39Thanks, Tim.

23:00to happen on Big Brother.
23:01I guess we'll find out then.
23:03Thanks for joining us.
