Vanessa Pomeroy, managing director of construction firm Barnack Estates in Peterborough explains why women and girls should consider a career in the construction industry.

00:0015 years ago I was the only woman on site and now you know you're seeing more

00:06quantity surveyors. I think the site management side is lacking a little bit

00:09you could definitely see that improve but yeah you in some sectors you're

00:14seeing 50-50 men and women so it's a lot better than it was. So it's not all just

00:21about being on a building site, you've got architects, you've got people

00:25designing, you've got you know marketing, estate agency, leading a development

00:34company. I think all of those areas are now visible to women and they can access

00:40them if they work hard. I think there's a lot more opportunities now for work

00:44experience which you know work experience and getting out there and

00:49seeing it is a lot more valuable sometimes than learning out of a

00:54notebook so any opportunity to get out there and see what you can do and get

01:00involved I think if you're grasping those opportunities early during school

01:06then it's going to set you up a lot better for when you leave school when

01:10you've got your qualifications to then go on into the construction industry. I

01:14think it's a really great industry for women to succeed in and there's a lot of

01:20different areas within the industry that girls can get involved with that they

01:25probably don't realise they can access.
