Eight people died in a suspected migrant smuggling operation off the coast of California.
Transcript
00:00This is one of the worst maritime smuggling tragedies that I can think of in California,
00:06certainly here in the city of San Diego. At least eight people died in a suspected
00:10migrant smuggling operation late Saturday night after a fishing boat reportedly capsized offshore.
00:15Officials were made aware of the incident after a woman on another boat, which was also a part
00:19of the apparent operation, called 911. A total of eight bodies were recovered, all of them adults.
00:25Heavy fog, high tide, and other weather conditions made the search,
00:28rescue, and recovery efforts more difficult. It is believed a total of 23 people were on
00:33board the two boats, but no additional bodies were found along the San Diego beach.
00:37Authorities believe the others potentially survived and escaped on land.
