00:00He had just been born. I'm freaking out because his mother rejected him.
00:11We called our vet and he, in very gentle words, said it's up to you guys to save this baby.
00:18We had a very big surprise this morning. Mother, unfortunately,
00:22instantly tried to kill the baby. So we are now on our way to the vet to try and save this little one.
00:28Not knowing what on earth is going on, we zip over to the vet and he explained that she's had to postpartum depression.
00:36It's that surge of hormones, especially with the first baby. This can happen.
00:43My husband and I both looked at each other and the reality of the situation really hit us at that moment.
00:55Are you ready?
00:59I'm here to party with your daddy.
01:01And that was that we were gonna have to raise this little baby donkey.
01:06Those first few weeks, I will remember the rest of my life.
01:15I think he thinks he's a dog.
01:17It was akin to like your first child.
01:19You don't know what you're doing,
01:21but that little donkey would just look at you with his eyes and
01:25follow you around with his little hooves in the house and it was magical.
01:30I mean you could tell he was falling in love with us and we were falling in love with him.
01:46He was growing up so quickly.
01:48There's definitely more of a mischievous side to him now.
01:52But he's just gentle and kind with everyone.
01:59One day Rick and I noticed Cash up at the fence line rubbing noses with his mother.
02:05Seeing them together like that was just incredibly heartwarming.
02:08I knew they both needed that and it also reassured me that at some point
02:14they'll be okay together.
02:17Raising Cash has given Rick and I a different appreciation for donkeys.
02:23You hanging out with Cash?
02:26It made me feel really guilty for having intentionally bred a donkey
02:31when I saw how many needed homes.
02:34I couldn't change that, but I realized I could change what I did in the future.
02:40So I became extremely passionate about saving donkeys
02:44because they're so misunderstood.
02:48We rescued our first set of four and it was amazing.
02:53Cash gave us a newfound purpose and now we've become avid rescuers.
02:59We are under contract on a 132 acre farm in Tennessee.
03:04We're working to create a donkey sanctuary and start rescuing on a bigger scale.
03:09Had it not been Cash, I never would have any awareness at all
03:13and it's drastically changed my life.
03:17I'm excited about the future for Cash, his mother, and the sanctuary.
