Hi, I'm Mirabel and I'm the author of Zeb Jets and the Ice Cream Calamity and it is
00:06
an adventure story which is set locally along the coastline and the reason why I wrote it
00:14
is to raise awareness to food allergy safety.
00:18
So I'm a grandmother and two of my grandchildren have food allergies.
00:23
One is allergic to dairy, it's not an intolerance, it's an allergy and the other one is allergic
00:29
to nuts and so we have to be careful to keep them safe.
00:35
Both children have got a prescription so whenever we go to a party or anywhere that we go we
00:42
do carry epipens with us but really speaking they're not a magic cure so it's very important
00:51
that we keep the children safe.
00:52
The reason that I wrote the story was because when I first found out about the allergies
00:58
I was quite nervous even if we went somewhere just always trying to make sure that there
01:05
wouldn't be any cross-contamination and then one day I thought I would write a story about
01:12
it because I love telling stories anyway and I had written many children's stories and
01:18
at that point I came up with the idea of a friendly fox cub and an adventurous dog and
01:25
I decided to put a pack at the end of the book which would encourage and inspire children
01:32
to find out more about allergy and we've also got a comic strip here so children can then
01:41
turn the story into a comic strip style story.
01:45
We've got what if questions, what if the allergen wasn't an ice cream, what could it be?
01:51
Because allergic disease is the largest growing disease in this country among children it
01:56
is very important that we raise the awareness to it.
