Cody Johnson caught up with Billboard's Tetris Kelly on the Winners Walk at the CMA Awards 2024.

00:00Talk about a big win. Album of the year. Congratulations.

00:03Thanks, man. I was pretty surprised.

00:05I mean, you said earlier that, you know, you might have thought Chris or Jelly was going to win.

00:09I did, but then whenever I saw Brandi pop out of her seat so fast, I thought, what was wrong?

00:13And then it can finally register to me like, oh, they just said your name.

00:17That is crazy.

00:18There were so many people that were deserving of this.

00:20But I have to say for me, Trent Willman, Jack Clark, Scott Gunner, Chris Lacey,

00:26all the people that put their hard work, all the musicians.

00:29It felt really good.

00:30Yeah.

00:31I forgot to thank God.

00:32So I'm going to just say, hey, look, without Jesus, I wouldn't be here.

00:36And I forgot to say that on stage, but I did Ric Flair.

00:39I don't know where that came from.

00:41Hey, man, that's a good one, though.

00:42My wife called me up.

00:43Brandi goes, you Ric Flaired on stage?

00:45I'm like, yeah, I did. I just won an album of the year.

00:47Had to let it out a little bit.

00:49Yeah, I love that.

00:50And speaking of what else happened on stage, I was so jealous, man.

00:53Carrie Underwood, wow, that was legendary, iconic.

00:56You had her on the Deluxe album.

00:57How was it to have her up there?

00:58Besides Reba McEntire, that is probably the most professional vocalist

01:02I've ever worked with.

01:04She is so great.

01:05She's so gracious, and she's so talented, and she took the time to come here

01:09and do that, and it meant the world to me.

01:11So, Carrie, if you're watching this, thank you from the bottom of my heart

01:13for doing that.

01:14Yeah, man, it was great.

01:15And then tell me, what do you do after now?

01:16How's the celebration?

01:18Pajamas.

01:19Oh, really?

01:19You're just going low-key?

01:20Water burger.

01:21Okay.

01:22Then we'll go to the after party.

01:23Okay, okay, I love it.

01:24There's steps to this, there's layers.

01:25Yeah, we got to go pajamas, water burger, after party.

01:28And I also did want to ask you, you were nominated for five.

01:30Was this the one you wanted the most?

01:32This is the exact one that I wanted.

01:34Look at that.

01:34I would have been happy with anything.

01:36Like I said before the show, when we were sitting on the red carpet,

01:39it's happy to be invited, and I'm happy to be invited to the party,

01:42to have all these years of work be recognized.

01:46But album of the year, that was the one that I wanted besides Entertainer,

01:49and maybe we'll get that someday.

01:50Hey, one day, man.

01:51Well, go and get in those pajamas, okay?

01:53I'm going.
