A ban on social media for under-16s is “on the table” if companies do not take action to protect children, the technology secretary has said. Peter Kyle wrote to Ofcom asking them to be more assertive with tech firms, as both he and the regulator ready themselves for new legal powers in the Online Safety Act to commence from the start of 2025. 00:14I don't want to ban things outright unless I absolutely need to do.

00:19I want to make sure that everybody can benefit from all of the opportunities

00:23that new technology, including social media, provides to people.

00:26But it must be safe, and I will always put the safety of people first.
