People on the street: Remembrance Day

With today being Remembrance Day, we went out onto the streets of Manchester to ask people why this day was important for them.

00:00Hi I'm Theo and this is People on the Street. Today I'm out in Manchester asking people about

00:03Remembrance Day which is today. Now wherever you go in Manchester today you'll see people

00:08wearing poppies and remembering those that lost their lives in the First World War, the Second

00:12World War and many conflicts since. So we want to know what makes it a special day for them,

00:17why they think it's important that we celebrate it and if there's someone in particular that comes

00:21to mind on this day. Oh it's mega important, it really is because as I said without it

00:27you wouldn't be there, I wouldn't be here and if we were here I'm sure we wouldn't have the freedom

00:32that we've got. I think for me it's probably been more important last few years with

00:38what's going on now like obviously it's realistically war could happen again and

00:43you'd want that kind of devotion again essentially to be set to real life.

00:49Yeah with respect the two minute silence it's not something that I do anything towards other

00:54than the two minute silence but yeah it's not like something I, it's not like as big a day I

01:00know that it is for other people. Well I think Remembrance Day is important to celebrate because

01:06without them we wouldn't be where we are now yeah without those people that died we wouldn't be here

01:10now but the only thing that gets my goat about Remembrance Day they never talk, I've seen all

01:15the plaques and everything in the everywhere they never talk about the West Indies. To me my grandma

01:23on my mum's side she lived in Salford and she'd tell me stories obviously during the time of the

01:29blitz of them getting under the dining room table like obviously in Manchester in kind of the slums

01:35they didn't have like bomb shelters things like that so I think even though it's not our reality

01:39it feels very much like reality because of the people that you've grown up with. I think it's

01:44important and also like I completely respect and understand why it's so very important for some

01:49people. I also understand why some people have less interest in it as well. I feel like I'm very

01:54much in the position of like I think it's important but like maybe it's not as important for me as it

01:59is for the people.
