00:00Billionaires and businesses are giving Election Day freebies.
00:04Elon Musk, a prominent supporter of Donald Trump, is giving $1 million daily to a random
00:10swing state voter who signs his petition, in a controversial giveaway that some argue
00:15is illegal.
00:16Musk announced the $1 million daily awards at a Trump rally on October 19th, weeks after
00:22he announced that any America PAC petition signee who refers another registered swing
00:26state voter to sign the petition by October 21st would receive $47.
00:32He then upped that offer for Pennsylvania voters, offering $100 per referral.
00:38Voters qualify for the giveaway by signing the petition that calls for support of free
00:42speech and the right to bear arms, but does not make any other specific call to action.
00:47It's technically illegal under federal election law to provide incentives to vote, but the
00:52law has seemingly never been enforced against companies, one expert told the New York Times
00:56in 2018.
00:58The giveaways become legal if they're opened up to anyone on Election Day, whether they
01:02voted or not, like Krispy Kreme's promotion.
01:05It's also legal to dole out the freebies in non-federal elections.
01:09Krispy Kreme donuts, Lime Scooter rides, and Johnny Rockets milkshakes are among the free
01:14items major companies will be handing out on Election Day to residents who cast their
01:18votes.
01:19And not all of them are requiring proof.
01:22Elected voters can get half off their Lyft ride share, bike share, or scooter ride between
01:275 a.m. and 10 p.m. local time on Tuesday using the code VOTE24.
01:32Uber is offering 50% off rides to polling places during voting hours.
01:37More than 55 million people have already cast their votes in the 2024 election via early
01:42in-person or mail-in voting, and that number is expected to triple by the end of the day
01:47Tuesday.
01:48About two-thirds of the voting-eligible population turned out for the 2020 presidential election,
01:53which this year includes 244 million Americans.
