Rising grocery prices are pushing more Americans to rely on credit cards, savings and borrowing for everyday essentials, according to recent consumer surveys.

00:02Americans are increasingly relying on credit cards, savings, and other forms of borrowing
00:08to cover groceries and other essentials as prices rise, according to surveys cited by USA Today.
00:15An OmniSense survey found 30% of consumers used credit cards for essentials in the past three
00:20months, knowing they might not pay off the balance. 20% borrowed from friends or family,
00:26and 18% used buy now, pay later services. An Urban Institute survey found that nearly
00:33one in five adults used savings to pay for groceries in 2025, while nearly one in 20
00:39relied on cash from a payday advance loan. Among adults ages 18 to 64, nearly 35% paid
00:47grocery credit card bills in full, while 19.6% carried a balance but made minimum payments,
00:53and 8.7% did not always make the minimum payment. OmniSense also found 85% of respondents believe
01:01brands use inflation to justify larger-than-necessary price increases. Nearly half of respondents,
01:0745%, said the government is more responsible than businesses for rising prices.
