Rainbows sweet shop opens in Hastings, East Sussex

Rainbows was a very well known sweet shop in Queens Arcade, Hastings, but it closed for good in March 2023. Alison and Simon Nicholls have reopened/relaunched Rainbows at the same location on October 30.

00:00I'm sure most people that live in Hastings and have been to Hastings will remember Rainbows

00:07from years ago. Rainbows has always been there, probably the last 20 years, maybe more, I'm

00:12not sure. I did at one time, four years, work in the shop next door and I myself had a real

00:17fondness for Rainbows, especially Arthur that used to own Rainbows. He was a really well

00:23known man, really well known in the town, so lovely. Unfortunately we lost him in COVID

00:29and then the shop ceased trading I think in 2023. It did become another sweet shop

00:35for a little while but that guy's now moved on and we were in the market for another business,

00:42having run Munchies for 15 years. Munchies is the ice cream shop down Rockanore, we still

00:47have that. Yeah, this sort of was coming available and I just couldn't turn it down because we've

00:52got such fond memories of the shop. We know that everybody that lives here has got real

00:57fond memories of the shop. So, yeah, I just had to have it and I really wanted to call

01:04it Rainbows, wasn't sure what other people were going to think but general consensus

01:09was yes, you've got to call it Rainbows. So Rainbows it is, you know, partly because everyone

01:15knows it as Rainbows and, you know, it was Arthur's honour as well to remember Arthur

01:21and regarding Arthur, he is long gone but watch this space because we've got a little

01:26surprise for everybody. Everybody that remembers the shop will remember when they see our little

01:32surprise. Got to come in for that. Yeah, so we've painted it all pink and yellow. I was

01:40inspired by Rebub and Custard Sweets, love them, love the colour, so nice and bright.

01:45It is work in progress. Shop will be a lot fuller when we finish filling it up. It's been

01:53quite busy so far. It's been lovely. I've had a lovely welcome from everyone. Everyone's been

01:57pleased to see us. A lot of people do know us from Munchies. But yeah, I'll be predominantly

02:01myself here. A couple of Saturday girls, maybe the odd part-time. I have got a lady coming back

02:09who used to work here, so sometimes it'll be me and Simon. Yeah, anything you want that we

02:16haven't got, you just ask and we'll do our best to get it in.
