Queensland’s new parliament to include a number of fresh faces

Queensland's new parliament is taking shape, and it includes a number of fresh faces. It’s one for the record books with the state's first Muslim woman elected at the weekend.

00:00A sea of brand new parliamentarians, among them Bisma Asif, making history.

00:08I'm not only the first Muslim, but the first Punjabi. My background is Pakistani as well.

00:13The 28-year-old has won the northern Brisbane seat of Sandgate for Labor.

00:18Ms Asif migrated from Pakistan when she was eight years old, speaks four languages and has two degrees.

00:26Aspiration drew her to politics.

00:29The reason I got involved in politics was to make sure I could make a difference in people's lives.

00:33For Russell Field, it was tragedy.

00:36His son Matthew, daughter-in-law Kate Ledbetter and unborn grandson Miles were killed when they were hit by a stolen car in 2021.

00:45We said at the time when Matt and Kate were killed and Miles, that their deaths can't be in vain.

00:51Something good has to come out of this.

00:53The 69-year-old is likely to win Kapalabagh for the LNP after campaigning on law and order.

01:00When somebody's jailed for six years for killing three people, there's something seriously wrong with the system.

01:05At 22 years old, Arianna Doolan could soon be the youngest woman ever elected to state parliament.

01:12She's on track to win another Labor-held seat for the LNP, Palmerstone in Moreton Bay.

01:19I don't believe age determines leadership capability and we saw that with Wyatt Roy at 19.

01:24He was elected to federal parliament.

01:26In central Queensland, the LNP's Donna Kirkland has claimed victory in Labor Heartland, winning Rockhampton.

01:33We have a community that are awake to the previous government having failed us on all levels.

01:41Labor now has the majority of its seats in the southeast, including Ipswich West,

01:46which the ALP's Wendy Bourne has won back for the party after a surprising loss at a by-election earlier this year.

01:54I just want to make sure that because Ipswich is growing so rapidly that we get all the funding that we deserve.
