Six in 10 parents want their children to be gifted cash for their birthday.  A poll, of 1,000 mums and dads with kids aged between five and 11, found despite this, the average child only receives a monetary gift from 41 per cent of birthday party attendees.   More than a third (36 per cent) would rather their little ones received cash as a present because their homes are full of toys their children never play with.  And 49 per cent prefer it so they can get something they actually want.  Despite this 22 per cent fear they'd be labelled 'lazy' if they didn’t buy an actual present, with 48 per cent worried it could be viewed as a last-minute option or it seems like a lack of effort.

00:15A new poll from the Post Office reveals that 60% of parents actually prefer cash gifts for their kids.

00:22But what's the etiquette of giving money to children?

00:25Firstly, keep it personal.

00:27Write a message in the card telling them to buy something they really want,

00:31and don't worry about how much to give.

00:34Just match what you would usually spend on a gift.

00:37Being overly generous can be embarrassing for everybody,

00:40or make it look like you're trying to outdo others.

00:43And if your child receives a cash gift,

00:46be sure that they write a thank you letter explaining what they bought with the money,

00:51or what they're saving up for with it.

00:53Giving cash to children is a valuable life lesson.

00:56It encourages financial independence and good spending habits.

00:59So, let's give children the gift of choice.
