Cabinet approves penal code amendments to address cyberbullying, says Fahmi

The Cabinet has given in-principle approval for amendments to the Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code related to cyberbullying on social media, with the corresponding bill expected to be tabled in the current Parliamentary session, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.   Speaking at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting on Friday (Oct 25), Fahmi, who also serves as the Unity Government’s spokesman, highlighted that these amendments are essential to closing gaps or 'lacuna' in the law, enabling stronger action against cyberbullies. 00:00The PM's meeting today has basically concluded a series of amendments to the Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code

00:13regarding the issue of cyberbullying, and an amendment will be brought to the Parliament in this meeting.

00:25In addition, an amendment called the Online Safety Act will also be brought to the Parliament

00:42to ensure that the internet will be safer, especially for children and their families.

00:55Overall, this is a step that we need to take to close the gap, or in English, the lacuna in the law,

01:09to take more firm action against cyberbullying.

01:15At the moment, the Government's findings show that there is no proper definition for cyberbullying.

01:30This will be brought to the Parliament this time, and we expect that by the beginning of December,

01:39it will be brought to the Parliament for a second reading.
