As water companies tackle the dual challenges of sewage and upgrades, families across the region will need to brace for higher bills in the years to come.

00:00As households prepare for a significant rise in water bills, new figures show just how

00:05much each region will feel the impact. Here in the North West, bills are projected

00:10to increase by 21%, with the average customer expected to pay £536 by 2030.

00:17This hike is part of a wider plan to improve water infrastructure including upgrading pipes,

00:22sewers and treatment facilities. At the same time, water quality remains a

00:27growing concern. Despite efforts to address pollution, sewage

00:30spills continue to rise. In May 2023, the Environment Agency said

00:35that only 16% of assessed surface waters in England achieved good ecological status, raising

00:41serious concerns about the environment and health risks linked to contaminated waterways.

00:46Water companies are facing increasing scrutiny to resolve these problems, but the necessary

00:50upgrades may take time. As water companies tackle these dual challenges,

00:54families across the region will need to brace for higher bills in the years to come.
