00:08Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we'll be taking a look at 10 key differences between

00:13the original Until Dawn and its 2024 remake.

00:17Let's go get em.

00:27Visuals

00:38One of the first differences fans will notice is how the visuals have been drastically changed.

00:42Many environments now feature new lighting to bring a little more life into set pieces.

00:47For starters, the opening scene where Sam makes her way to the mountain has more appropriate

00:51lighting given the time of day she arrives.

00:54However, at the expense of all this color grading and lighting adjustments, we have

00:58lost the dreary blue hue that gave the original its unique appearance.

01:02Character models, on the other hand, do boast more texture for clothing and faces here than

01:06they did in the original.

01:08Heck, even Matt got a brand new hairdo for the remake.

01:17The Opening

01:18Another noticeable change in the remake is how the game starts off.

01:26Upon starting the game, players now get a glimpse of the ill-fated party that would

01:29spiral into Hannah and Beth's deaths.

01:32You get a better idea of how everybody viewed the prank in the moment and how out of hand

01:36it became.

01:37Not only that, but Beth's entire sequence in searching for her sister is no longer just

01:42quick time events.

01:43You now have to walk through the forest and move Beth yourself.

01:47There's even a sequence where you are ambushed by the stranger in one of the entrances to

01:51the mines.

01:52At the end of the day, this change is going to fall on whether you like the faster opening

01:56we saw in the original or if you prefer the additional context and presentation that the

02:01remake brings.

02:08Matt and Emily's Relationship

02:18In the original version of Until Dawn, Matt and Emily were clearly in a troubling relationship

02:22as Emily would boss Matt around.

02:24Doesn't help that they had conflicting personalities, it seems.

02:28At times, it even seemed like they didn't even want to be around each other or that

02:32Matt was probably just a rebound for Em.

02:35The remake is changing this aspect of their relationship a tad and has added an entirely

02:40new section that shows their more flirty and romantic side.

02:45There is still a bit of tension if Matt discovers remnants of Em and Mike's relationship.

02:49However, if you felt the two were way too hostile towards each other in the original,

02:53the remake offers a different take on the matter in a brand new perspective.

03:05New Camera Angles

03:13Part of what made Until Dawn a memorable game for players was its unique and imaginative

03:18camera angles.

03:19There are many scenes that manage to reinforce an unsettling fear inside players just through

03:24thoughtful composition, lighting, and character positioning.

03:27It evoked a lot of the anxiety and terror seen in so many classic horror films of the

03:3280s.

03:33Plus, the fixed camera angles just made everything a lot scarier.

03:37The remake has altered so many of these shots, though, to be completely different from the

03:42original game.

03:43Whether they hold the same depth and meaning in their own unique way is within the eye

03:46of the beholder.

03:47However, in our time with the game, it definitely felt like camera angles were chosen more for

03:52basic readability than for meaning.

03:54Also, the over-the-shoulder camera really takes away the terror.

03:59It just does.

04:07Totems

04:12Aside from quick-time events playing a less significant role, the remake of Until Dawn

04:17has another layer of gameplay added in, specifically in totems.

04:21In the original game, all you had to do was pick up a totem and rotate it till its mouth

04:25was exposed.

04:27In the remake, all of the original totems have now different placements, and some will

04:31show premonitions different from the original.

04:34Not only that, but you will have to manipulate the totem piece until you can find a shimmering

04:39crack in order to see these premonitions.

04:42So it kind of brings a new layer, like a new puzzle mechanic to this.

04:46Oh, and there is now a sixth type of totem to find, the hunger totems, which will help

04:52provide glimpses into what exactly happened to Hannah and Beth.

05:03Exploration

05:12As we saw with Matt and Emily and their relationship getting more light, the remake of Until Dawn

05:16puts a bit more focus on thorough exploration.

05:20These now feature additional areas that can provide more lore about the mountain, lead

05:24to a new totem, or even new interactions between the characters.

05:28Some of this new dialogue can be for laughs, other moments might reveal new details about

05:33their relationships, or just new details about the things that had happened before their

05:37arrival.

05:38That said, if you see your companion walk in one direction, it may not hurt to walk

05:42in the opposite direction to search for hidden items and interactions.

05:56Music

05:57OG fans of Until Dawn might hold some resentment towards the remake for this change.

06:07The 2015 original featured music composed by Jason Graves, who had previously worked

06:12on music for games like Alpha Protocol, The Order 1886, and the Dead Space series.

06:18Of course, no one can forget the haunting opening song, Oh Death, sung by Amy Van Roekel.

06:24Well, the remake replaces all of that, and replacing Graves is Mark Corvin, a film and

06:30TV composer whose works include The First Omen, The Black Phone, The Lighthouse, the

06:36second series of The Twilight Zone, and many more horror films and shows.

06:41As for the opening song, Until Dawn's remake features a brand new song sung by Mae Stevens.

06:56Controls

07:02While going through playthroughs of both the original Until Dawn and the remake, there

07:07is one glaring issue we found in the remake, the controls.

07:10Upon hearing this, one might jump to conclusions and think that the motion controls for standing

07:14still are utterly busted.

07:16On the contrary, the remake is significantly more accurate than the original game ever

07:21was with this concept.

07:23What the remake truly fails in is making basic movement functional.

07:27There were plenty of times where characters weren't moving in the correct direction

07:31we wanted them to, and sometimes, they weren't even moving at all.

07:35And if there is indeed a sprint button in this game, it surely wasn't working for

07:40us in the majority of our playthrough.

07:46The technical performance

07:57Now this might be the biggest crime of Until Dawn's remake.

08:02Sony, Ballistic Moon, you guys went and touched up the visuals, made the game pretty and everything

08:08under a brand new engine for a modern gaming console.

08:12Why in the hell does this game run at a wildly unstable 30 frames per second?

08:19For reference, the 2015 original runs at 60 frames per second on PlayStation 4 Pro, and

08:25the PlayStation 5 replicates that experience.

08:29So what's the remake's excuse?

08:31Too much snow physics?

08:33Skin pores too highly detailed?

08:36Mike and Ashley being too damn sexy?

08:39Why spend 60 bucks on a remake when the original sells for 20 and runs at a buttery smooth

08:4560 as every game should?

08:56The ending Yes folks, this is supposedly the biggest

09:04selling point for the remake, a new ending, and in all honesty, isn't even that special.

09:10We won't spoil it if you want to witness it for yourself, but if you're shooting

09:14for it, you will need to choose a very specific sequence of choices during the sessions with

09:19Dr. Hill.

09:20On top of that, make sure you pick up the Scrawled Journal item in Chapter 10.

09:25Once you've done all of that and make sure Sam survives, you will be treated to an ending

09:30that winds up leaving open an opportunity for a sequel, a whole nine years after the

09:36original game released.

09:38Better late than never, we suppose.
