Hi there my name is Kelly Brown I'm the editor of the Portsmouth News and today I'm having a tour
00:04
of the Royal Hostel Hasler site which is being redeveloped into new homes.
00:08
Some of the residents have already moved into Canada House and we've got other buildings on
00:13
site which are still being refurbished or being used for other purposes at the moment
00:19
but much of the historic site is being retained. The only buildings that are being lost or have
00:25
been lost are the ones that are not of historical interest and not the listed buildings but things
00:31
like this watchtower are being retained. All this open space in the background is going to be
00:38
reused so that we use by residents and then if we go over this way keep going around there's
00:45
more buildings towards the original hospital building so this over in this far corner
00:55
is what is now going to be known as Trinity House you just see it in the top and that is
01:01
the latest part of the development where properties for there are going to go on sale shortly.
01:06
Welcome to Royal Hasler and we're standing here in the courtyard of the first wing that we have
01:14
refurbished of the former hospital which dates back to 1745 and residents will be moving in
01:21
here in the next four to six weeks which is a milestone in the redevelopment of Royal Hasler.
01:28
To date there's over 100 people living on site in other buildings that we've refurbished but this is
01:33
the first building of the actual hospital or original hospital itself.
01:51
So
02:05
hello I'm Mark Trasler I'm chairman of Hasler Heritage Group. Hasler Heritage Group was founded
02:24
to look after the history of the former Royal Naval Hospital at Hasler which was in use
02:32
incredibly between 1753 and 2009. I'm standing in front of St Luke's Church. St Luke's Church really
02:42
marked the end of the building but the main hospital it was originally designed
02:49
designed as a four-sided quadrangle but not unheard of today they ran out of money
02:57
and the fourth side was never built instead St Luke's Church was placed here to cater for the
03:07
needs of the patients and staff of the hospital which indeed it has done for over 260 years.
