The HSC commences across NSW with record 80,000 students sitting exams

There were plenty of nerves and a maybe a few all-nighters as HSC students across the state headed into their first exam. This year, a record 80,000 students are sitting the exams, which are now in their 50th year.

00:00The HSC takes years of hard work, plenty of last minute cramming and at least a little

00:07good luck.

00:08My main ritual is I have this same pink pen I use for every exam.

00:12Before every exam I knock on wood with my right hand on the floor because it's timber

00:17so it gives me a bit of good luck. I do it twice. I know it's a bit weird but it works.

00:22This year plenty of students have been living and breathing their studies.

00:26Mostly just sleeping, studying and then going back to sleep again.

00:29Although it does come with some perks.

00:32I've actually gotten off all the chores so a lot of leniency there.

00:36Before the first English exam this morning nerves were running high.

00:39I was terrified, I'm not going to lie. It was terrifying walking into that because trials

00:44isn't the same.

00:45No matter how many exams they do previously this is the big one so it's always stressful.

00:53There were some curly questions.

00:55I was expecting all the questions to be tricky. I didn't expect anything to be easy. I knew

01:00it was going to be hard.

01:01But for many the preparation paid off.

01:03The question for the essay was exactly what I studied.

01:07After 50 years the HSC is now a well oiled machine.

01:10Seven and a half thousand supervisors, five thousand markers, 750 exam centres.

01:16For students the first exam is a rite of passage marking the beginning of the end of 13 years

01:21of schooling.

01:22I want you to also take some time to thank at least one teacher. A teacher that has helped

01:29you throughout your journey that ends with this exam period.

01:34With the first test done there's time for a quick breather.

01:37I'll go home, I'll go back to my parents, say Dad, Mum, I did amazing.

01:42But then it's back to the books for the three weeks of exams ahead.
