24 February - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00Welcome to your national weather update, a dry weekend for most places with a colder feel as well.
00:07But before we get to the weekend, let's get through Friday. Lots of cloud through the night, Thursday night into Friday morning.
00:13This weather front is just dribbling southwards, but it's this high pressure that will dominate through the weekend.
00:19However, it's not here yet, as I said, so we've got to get rid of this weather front.
00:22It's been working southwards, bringing quite a bit of cloud over northern England to start the day and now pushing south into parts of Wales and the Midlands,
00:29bringing a little bit of rain at times, but nothing too heavy. Behind that, brighter skies, some sunshine, but a few showers, particularly for northeast Scotland.
00:37And we'll see a few more coming into eastern England through the afternoon.
00:40Some brighter spells in the southwest, but generally just dry and cloudy here.
00:45Should see some decent spells of sunshine for western Scotland and Northern Ireland.
00:49It's all moving southwards because the winds are coming in from the north and they're bringing a bit of a chill.
00:55Quite mild still in the south, 10, maybe in the southwest, 11 or 12 Celsius, but generally 8 to 10.
01:00And when you add on the wind, it feels a lot colder than that on these eastern coasts in particular.
01:07Feeling quite raw, I suspect, with that chilly winds off the North Sea.
01:11So a cold feel in the east, not quite so cold further west, but generally it is turning colder as we go through the weekend.
01:18We'll continue to see some showers coming into eastern parts through the evening and overnight.
01:22Possibility over hills of a few flakes of snow, but generally it becomes dry.
01:27The skies will clear in the southwest and clear skies for southern Scotland, Northern Ireland.
01:32Meaning a fairly extensive frost here, but even further south where we've got some breaks in the cloud, parts of Wales, the Midlands, southern England.
01:38Certainly in rural areas, we'll be down below freezing and in the countryside, maybe minus two, perhaps even as low as minus four in one or two spots.
01:46So a chilly start to the weekend for quite a few of us.
01:49It will be a sunny start, certainly for the central belt of Scotland, much of Northern Ireland, south Wales and southern England.
01:55More cloud for northern Scotland and eastern England.
01:57And here we will continue to see a few showers.
02:00They'll be pretty well scattered, not going to amount to too much, but get caught in a shower with that breeze.
02:05Although not as strong, still making it feel quite cold, I suspect.
02:09And generally it'll cloud over a little bit through the day further west also.
02:13But I say most places dry temperatures won't be as high as they have been for most of this week.
02:19So pretty feeling quite fresh, I suspect, six, seven, eight degrees.
02:23So a touch below average for many. And again, there will be this breeze on some North Sea coast, making it feel even colder here.
02:29And quite a colder feel compared to today in southern parts.
02:33Through Saturday evening, bar the odd shower in the east again, most places staying dry again.
02:38We've got clear skies, particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland.
02:41Expect a very hard frost as we head into Sunday.
02:45Little change on Sunday. You can see the winds are going around like this.
02:49That's because there's a big area of high pressure just sitting over Scotland and Northern Ireland and dominating our weather.
02:56The ice bars still close enough together to generate a bit of a breeze in the east and on the south coast.
03:01And that will make quite a big difference to the feel of the day on Sunday, I suspect.
03:06Again, with that high in place, the air is sinking. So most places dry.
03:10Some bright spells, often fairly cloudy, I suspect.
03:13So not a huge amount of sunshine and certainly chilly, particularly in the south and east where it will be quite breezy.
03:20That's it from me for now. But please do stay up to date with the weather through the weekends by following us across social media.
