00:00Hi, welcome back to my channel, in this video, I will explain the ending of Remember, so,

00:04let's begin.

00:06Netflix's Remember is a Japanese horror movie that follows the story of four high school

00:10students who get stuck in a time loop.

00:12In order to break out of it, they have to solve a decades-old mystery.

00:16For as long as the mystery remains unsolved the teenagers will continue to live the same

00:20day over and over again.

00:22All this while, they also have to survive a ghost who brutally kills them each night.

00:26By the end of the film, the teenagers succeed in getting a gist of what the time loop entails.

00:31The ending is bittersweet because despite winning, they lose a very important thing.

00:36If you are wondering how the film ends and what it means for the characters, then we've

00:43Asuka is one of the invisible students in school.

00:47She doesn't have any friends, she is not popular.

00:50Her life is pretty boring and she is just waiting for school to be over so that she

00:53can go to college and start her life anew.

00:56All of this changes one day when she gets a series of cryptic texts and as soon as the

01:00clock hits midnight, she wakes up back at school with five other classmates, Takahiro,

01:04Shota, Rie, Atsushi, and Rumiko.

01:08All of them die within the next few minutes.

01:10The next day when Asuka wakes up, she discovers that she is back in yesterday.

01:15As the same things repeat, she realizes that she and the others are stuck in a time loop.

01:20Shota tells them about the body search, where the task is to find all the body parts of

01:24a dismembered victim.

01:26Until they do that, they will keep living the same day over and over again.

01:30With the next loop, the teenagers are more prepared for the task at hand, especially

01:34when it comes to fighting the red person, a ghost-slash-monster who hunts them down

01:38and kills them every night.

01:40How do Asuka and her friends break out of the time loop?

01:43As soon as the teenagers realize what is happening to them, they start to take the task seriously

01:47and come up with a plan.

01:49Shota brings the blueprint of the school and they start marking down all the places where

01:53they have already searched for a body part.

01:55Every night they try to cover a certain area of the school and after many loops, they succeed

01:59in assembling the entire body, except the head.

02:03The teenagers knew that the head would be the most difficult part to find.

02:07The head of Miko, the girl who was murdered and dismembered and whose body part they now

02:10need to bring together, was never found.

02:14During the day, they visit the crime scene.

02:16Miko was killed in her summer home not far from their school.

02:20They discover that the house is still desolate and dilapidated.

02:23They discover a secret hole in the wall where they find Miko's doll, Emily.

02:27From the pictures on the wall, it is clear that Miko loved her doll very much as it was

02:31her only friend.

02:33Before Asuka and her friends can touch the doll, it suddenly disappears.

02:37They are forced to flee the house and start to believe that the doll has something to

02:40do with the ghost and the time loop.

02:43The same night, Miko's ghost merges with the doll to create a new monster that eats Rie.

02:48The next day, everyone shows up, but Rie is nowhere to be seen.

02:52Her existence is erased, which means that if the monster eats you, you are dead for

02:56good.

02:57The sudden emergence of the doll leads Asuka to the fact that the doll is where Miko's

03:01head is.

03:02She remembers the time when the ghost caught her, Dai, and Rumiko in the swimming pool

03:06and the doll was in the water, it drowned head first.

03:10This means that the head was heavier than the rest of the doll, meaning that something

03:13else was inside.

03:15Considering how the doll has suddenly become a part of the monster that hounds them, they

03:19deduce that the head must be there.

03:21This means that they will have to face the monster, rather than run away and try to survive

03:25it.

03:26That night, they create a trap for the monster, knowing that if they get eaten they'll probably

03:30be erased forever.

03:32By the end of the night, the monster succeeds in killing almost all of them.

03:36Only Asuka and Takahiro remain by the end.

03:39In the brief moment that the monster is trapped, Takahiro saws its head in half and the head

03:43falls off the doll.

03:45He and Asuka take it to the chapel where they have already collected the rest of the body.

03:50Before they can place the head in the coffin, the monster returns.

03:54Takahiro fights it but is killed.

03:56With all of her friends gone, Asuka decides not to run away from the monster anymore.

04:00She fights it and eventually kills it.

04:03Asuka takes the head to the coffin where she places it with the rest of the body.

04:07She wakes up the next morning and discovers that it is the next day.

04:11They have broken out of the loop.

04:13But, as expected, all of them have forgotten about the time loop and the body search.

04:18On the news, the report about Miko's dead body being found is released, which means

04:22that the teenagers succeeded in their task and broke out of the loop for good.

04:26Do Asuka and Takahiro remember the time loop and the body search?

04:31While the time loop and getting killed by a ghost over and over again was a traumatic

04:34experience for the teenagers, the one good thing that came out of it was their friendship.

04:39The reason they were chosen for the body search was that all of them had been lonely in one

04:42way or another.

04:44Asuka and Shota were the school outcasts, and Atsushi was depressed over having lost

04:48the opportunity for a career in basketball.

04:51Rie was sad because the man she was dating was actually someone else's boyfriend and

04:55she was nothing more than his side piece.

04:57Rumiko felt that she was popular but she didn't have any real friends.

05:01Takahiro was afraid that he might have let go of the only opportunity of playing professional

05:05basketball and that this one decision would ruin his life.

05:09When the six of them meet, they find a group that understands them and supports them.

05:13Because they have been through a traumatic experience together, they are more open with

05:16each other about what they really feel.

05:19They become each other's closest friends.

05:22This is why it is heartbreaking when Asuka discovers that once the body search is done

05:25and the loop is broken, all the memories they shared with each other during this time will

05:29be lost.

05:30Asuka will go back to being the invisible person that had no friends, and the rest of

05:34her friends will end up in the same cycle of dejection and loneliness.

05:38In between the friendships, another thing that Asuka found was a rekindling of the bond

05:42between her and Takahiro.

05:44They had known each other since they were kids, but they drifted apart.

05:48Asuka became an outcast while Takahiro was the most popular boy in school.

05:53Even if he wanted to be friends with her, peer pressure didn't allow him to be seen

05:56with a girl who didn't have any friends.

05:59But when they get stuck in the time loop, they let go of the pretenses and it becomes

06:02clear to their friends that they are in love with each other.

06:06When Asuka tells Takahiro about how she will go back to being a nobody once the loop is

06:09over, he promises that he will not let that happen.

06:13He gives her his pin, saying that no matter what happens, he will find her.

06:17The next day, when the loop is over, it turns out that the six of them have really forgotten

06:21everything.

06:22They go back to being the same people they were before, but there is one thing that's

06:26different.

06:27Atsushi, who never came to school, suddenly shows up, saying that his attendance is low.

06:32When the selection of committee members happens, all six of them receive the chits.

06:37This turns them into a group again, but with a different purpose.

06:41On their way to the committee meeting, something falls out of Asuka's pocket and Takahiro notices

06:45that it is his pin.

06:46Seeing the pin brings back memories and he calls out to Asuka.

06:50He puts the pin in her hands, saying that he told her he would find her.

06:54Asuka smiles too, affirming that her memories are coming back too.

06:58It is clear from their last interaction that Takahiro and Asuka remember something regarding

07:02the time loop.

07:04However, as already told by the librarian, Mr. Yashiro, the complete memories never come

07:08back.

07:10As had happened in his case, he and his friends forgot about the whole body search thing,

07:14but the feeling remained.

07:16All the days that they'd spent with each other left something in their minds, and those emotions

07:20echoed whenever they came across something that would tie them to the time loop.

07:23Consequentially, Mr. Yashiro couldn't remember everything from the time loop, but he remembered

07:28how he felt about a girl who had been in the loop with him.

07:31The same thing happens to Takahiro and Asuka too.

07:34They had developed strong emotions for each other and the pin symbolized that.

07:38So, when they saw the pin, those feelings came back to them.

07:42Even if they don't remember the body search, they remember each other and the love that

07:46they had for one another.

07:48From this, we can assume that the rest of the group also has fragments of such feelings

07:51inside them, which will start to surface when they spend more time with each other on the

07:55committee.

07:57They might have to start from scratch, getting to know each other all over again, but it

08:00looks like they will be able to rebuild the friendships they had forged in the time loop.
