Reporter Neil tries 50 minutes inside a Harmonic Egg

Claire Grabham talks about how a late-night impulse buy led to her owning one of just three Harmonic Eggs in the UK - housed in Sunderland. And Sunderland Echo reporter Neil Fatkin tries it out.

00:00I was like, what is that?

00:01What is that massive egg with light shining out of it?

00:04Clicked on it.

00:05It just sort of hit us in the chest.

00:07It was like, yeah, I need that.

00:10I need a harmonic egg.

00:11I think that was about 11 o'clock at night that I looked into that.

00:14When was this? How long ago was this?

00:15It's about June 2020.

00:16And it's the first thing, did you go and experience it yourself first or?

00:18A seeing person would have went to experience it themselves first and then bought it.

00:24No, I just bought it.

00:25It had to be built in the US.

00:30And then shipped over.

00:31At the time, there was an egg in Chester, in a place called Doddleston in Chester.

00:36And I purchased the egg, went along.

00:40I just had this, it's like this knowing that it was going to be the thing.

00:43So I understand there's only three of these in the country.

00:46Yeah.

00:47Yours being one here in Sunderland.

00:48At the time, I was working within schools as a relaxed kids coach.

00:53And that was helping children with their emotions and helping them calm the nervous systems.

00:59Personally, I was going to sound baths.

01:02And when you go to a sound bath, they use lots of different instruments

01:08that help calm your nervous system.

01:10And different instruments can have different effects.

01:12So I was going to sound baths.

01:14I realized it was calming my nervous system.

01:17And I started using it in school, in my classes.

01:21And I found that kids with autism, kids with ADHD,

01:26might not be able to do my meditation part of the class.

01:29But when I use sound, it would calm the nervous system.

01:32So I was using it in my classes.

01:35I was using sound in my classes.

01:37I was going to sound baths.

01:38I was sharing the information with friends.

01:40And they were like, we've got to go to the next sound bath.

01:42It was amazing.

01:42I was, you know, it really helped us with my sleep.

01:45It really helped us feel calm.

01:48And there was one day I said, I'm going to Google when the next sound bath is.

01:51And when I Googled it, the egg came to the top of the Google search.

01:55And it just hit us in the face.

01:56And we went to try the harmonic egg.

01:59And on the way back, nobody was talking.

02:02And I said, hey, I'm really sorry.

02:03I've just got nothing to say, which is unusual for me.

02:07And they were like, Claire, it's all right.

02:09We've got nothing to say as well.

02:11And it literally calmed us so much.

02:13I just had that sort of peacefulness where

02:16when you're a child and you're going on a school trip

02:20or you're going on a journey in the car

02:22and you're looking out the window

02:23and you haven't got to think about emails

02:25and you haven't got to think about bills.

02:26Your mind's totally clear.

02:28That was the feeling.

02:29So it was shipped over.

02:31And then two people from America, Daryl and his partner, came in and built it.

02:36And originally we started in Newcastle.

02:38Claire soon moved to the business and the harmonic egg

02:41to the North East Business and Innovation Centre in Sunderland, also known as the BIC.

02:46I'd been watching the BIC for a while.

02:48A friend that I knew had brought a cakery business here.

02:52And I noticed that she got a lot of support.

02:54Another friend had bought the orthotics business here.

02:57And I noticed they had a lot of support.

02:59So I started looking into the BIC and what they could offer.

03:01And it felt like more of a community.

03:03When I was in Newcastle, it was just, I was in an office

03:06and I was sort of by myself and there wasn't really a community around us.

03:11I've come to the BIC and I know everybody.

03:14Sunderland Echo reporter Neil comes to the end of his 15-minute session.

03:18Yeah, it's a few minutes now since I've come out of the harmonic egg.

03:21And I must admit, I still do feel sort of lighter across my whole body.

03:26I'm very relaxed, very chilled.

03:28You do feel you go on a bit of a journey.

03:30I used to do a lot of travel when I was younger.

03:32And since settling down, don't get the chance.

03:34And whether it was the sort of the Indian theme music or the sounds of nature.

03:40Yeah, I sort of felt that I was almost sort of somewhere like the foothills of the Himalaya

03:44or on a beach next to the Indian Ocean.

03:46And yeah, it just was very relaxing, very tranquil.

03:52And yeah, I certainly feel a lot more relaxed and chilled than when I came in.

03:56And yeah, if you have got a stressful life, do have anxiety issues,

04:02I'd certainly recommend giving it a try and seeing what works for you.

04:05I had one guy who was quite high-flying businessman.

04:09And I think he was a bit sceptical when he came in.

04:12I'm going to try this thing, he said.

04:15And I'm going to see how it goes.

04:16And I was like, right, OK.

04:18And he come out and he said, it made me thoughts more clear.

04:22And he said, but it took the emotion out of the thought.

04:25So it gave him clarity and focus on some of his thoughts.

04:29But it took the emotion out so that he could actually have that clarity.

04:32And he would come in to solve problems.

04:35So I'm feeling that Sunderland is the place to be.

04:38You've got all of the businesses that are in Newcastle now,

04:43transferring into Sunderland, all of these new places opening.

04:47You've then got the new film industry coming along too.

04:51So it's going to be like the next Manchester, I think.
