00:07Amos' son, Casey Amos, announced on Tuesday, October 1st, that his father died August 21st
00:14in Los Angeles of natural causes.
00:16He said in a statement, in part,
00:18"...he was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold, and he was loved the world
00:22over.
00:23Many fans consider him their TV father.
00:25He lived a good life.
00:26His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor."
00:31The former college football player saw his showbiz career take off after he landed a
00:35gig to play weatherman Gordie Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
00:39After showing up a dozen times on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, he was invited to read for
00:42the part of James Evans Sr. on a new CBS series, Good Times, a spinoff of Maude, Good Times
00:48ran from 1974 to 1979.
00:52Amos starred on the show for three seasons, but he soon disapproved of the silly, stereotypical
00:56storylines that surrounded their oldest son on the series, J.J., and he went public with
01:01his criticism.
01:02His character was later killed off the show in the beginning of season four.
01:05The New Jersey native received his Emmy nomination for his work on the acclaimed 1977 ABC miniseries
01:11Roots and had recurring roles on The West Wing, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and The
01:15Ranch, among other shows.
01:17He also appeared in numerous films, including 1988's Coming to America.
