00:00The human diet is the most diverse of any creature in the world.
00:06And it's been key to our success in occupying virtually every corner of the Earth.
00:12But from country to country, there are rumors about what kinds of gourmet meals we eat.
00:20From the more familiar specialties like eel and octopus,
00:25to less appetizing cuisines such as locusts and dogs.
00:31But there is one aficionado of exotic dining
00:35whose extraordinary diet is never found on anyone's menu.
00:44Ah, France. A land legendary for its scenery,
00:49its romantic cafes, and its rich and fascinating culture.
00:56Home to the City of Lights, immaculate medieval castles,
01:02and many of history's most brilliant art treasures.
01:08This enchanting country is most renowned for its world-class cuisine.
01:15But in the quaint Alpine village of Villars de Lens,
01:19there lives a man with a most peculiar palate.
01:24Today, Michel Lotito's unique cravings have set him off on a search
01:30for a midday snack at a very unlikely eatery,
01:35his neighborhood sporting goods store.
01:54Michel is nothing if not a discerning diner.
02:02Which the rest of us might find a little hard to stomach.
02:15This is because Monsieur Mangetout, as he is called,
02:19eats almost everything.
02:37When I eat a piece of something, I first eat it mentally.
02:41I eat it inside my head so that my body is ready to deal with the foreign substance.
02:48Then, when there is metal or plastic or porcelain or glass in my digestive tract,
02:54everything goes down easy.
03:00His ghastly gastronomic indulgences are the sort of things we'd expect
03:05might actually stick to his ribs.
03:10And in fact, these x-rays prove that Monsieur Mangetout has said everything
03:16from computer parts to shopping carts down the hatch.
03:23Yet, incredibly, he has never suffered illness or side effects from his metallic munchies.
03:30A stomach lining twice the normal thickness
03:34allows him to digest everything from beds to skis.
03:40I have eaten one Cessna plane that took two years,
03:4518 bicycles, 18 shopping carts,
03:49seven television sets, two beds,
03:53one pair of skis and one computer.
03:59Because I hold the world record for eating so many things,
04:03I have the world record for world records.
04:10Michel has spent his entire life turning meals into headlines.
04:14It would put even Betty Crocker on a crash diet.
04:21I ate an entire coffin once, including the handles.
04:25The doctors were saying, he's going to die.
04:28So I said, before the coffin gulps me down, I'm going to gobble it up.
04:33Michel is quite at home with more traditional cuisine.
04:37He enjoys a good steak,
04:40and even a junkyard gourmet knows enough to eat his veggies.
04:46But when the last of the meal is consumed in the company of good friends,
04:51Michel likes to top it off with a little something extra.
04:57Never one to bite on,
04:59Never one to bite off more than he can chew,
05:02he can dispense with the chore of doing the dishes.
05:18This lacerating lunch is not recommended for all.
05:30Michel, however, establishes eating habits at an early age
05:34when most of us learn what we shouldn't put in our mouth.
05:42When I was eight years old, I was very small,
05:45and the kids made fun of me.
05:47That's when I started to control my pain.
05:50It took away my suffering.
05:52Then, one day by accident, when I was 16,
05:56I broke a glass, and I ate it.
06:01Since that day, Michel has turned his titanic taste
06:05into a profession where he won't feel fulfilled until he feels full.
06:13Ever watchful of his diet,
06:15he gets his daily quota of roughage,
06:18even while relaxing at home.
06:21When the frustrations of the evening news are enough to turn his stomach,
06:26Michel's gut reaction is to enjoy a little TV dinner.
06:38Bon appétit.
06:52Are there any limits to his appetite?
06:55Is there any artifact of man he could not devour?
07:00Dare he take on the challenge of the ultimate French feast?
07:10I've been offered the Eiffel Tower.
07:12Unfortunately, it belongs to the French people.
07:15Anyway, I'd rather eat a good steak.
07:19Gourmet or garbage disposal,
07:22Monsieur Mangetout's culinary curiosities
07:27serve up a tall order that is certainly beyond bizarre.
