‘You should return home’: limited assistance for Australians in Lebanon

“The numbers of Australians in Lebanon are beyond the capacity of the government to provide assistance to all”, foreign affairs minister Penny Wong said.

00:00You would have heard me calling for many months now for Australians who are in Lebanon to return home.

00:07You would, I hope, have heard me say, and the Prime Minister and other Ministers,

00:12that we would urge dual nationals, Australian citizens, permanent residents,

00:18to take commercial options whilst they were still available.

00:23Whilst we are doing what we can to prepare contingency arrangements,

00:29the numbers of Australians in Lebanon are beyond the capacity of the Government

00:34to provide assistance to all.

00:38There are very large numbers of Australians in Lebanon,

00:41which is why we again say to any Australian who is in Lebanon,

00:46what we have been saying for months,

00:49which is you should return home as soon as you are able to

00:53whilst commercial options are still available if they are.
