00:00It's National Suicide Prevention Month, and once again, Cohen Veterans Network, the nonprofit
00:06network of mental health clinics for post 9-11 veterans, service members and their families,
00:12have launched a special initiative to help.
00:15Veterans are 1.7 times more likely to die by suicide than their civilian counterparts,
00:22with the highest risk occurring during their transition from military service.
00:27So to bring awareness to this critical period, we've launched Mind the Gap, preventing suicide
00:33after service.
00:36It's a campaign that provides strategies and resources for suicide prevention.
00:41Neil Walden says each year approximately 200,000 men and women transition from U.S. military
00:47service to civilian life.
00:49The year following military service has been called the deadly gap, a period in which the
00:54veteran suicide rate is 2.5 times the rate among active duty military personnel.
01:00Reaching out to individuals during their transition can have a meaningful impact.
01:04The transition from military service can be filled with opportunity.
01:08It can be a really exciting time for many veterans as they face the next chapter in
01:14their life.
01:16However, some veterans may also face significant challenges during this period due to loss
01:22of camaraderie, a loss of sense of purpose, employment, and financial stress, and maybe
01:30coping with unmet mental health challenges and conditions.
01:34The convergence of such challenges can result in elevated suicide risk, particularly for
01:42those who exit the military on short notice or without a plan in place.
01:48In addition to therapy, CVM provides comprehensive case management services, which can support
01:54transitioning veterans and all clients with potential stressors such as unemployment,
02:01finances, housing, and more.
02:05As part of the campaign, the network has created a new interactive tool that individuals can
02:10utilize for a proactive approach to suicide prevention.
02:13To speak up how to address concerns about suicide, provide suggestions about what to
02:18say and do if a loved one is exhibiting signs of emotional distress.
02:22This tool is available for free.
02:25It's important that we get behind the issue of suicide and work together to bring these
02:32numbers down.
