More than 50 pubs a month on average were lost in England and Wales during the first half of 2024.

00:00Britain is losing its pubs at an alarming rate. Inflation is reducing

00:05customer spending and raising costs, with over 50% of consumers highlighting that

00:11the price of drinks being a key reason not to go out as frequently.

00:16It's an English tradition isn't it? So it's not very good if the old people don't drink.

00:22I like pubs, but I like the traditional type of pub that's going down.

00:28You know, it's the small ones, you know, where people in a local community would

00:33congregate and exchange information, exchange news, you know, used to be part

00:39of the local scene. I think the only way pubs can survive now is to become mega

00:44pubs and we've got plenty of big pubs in Liverpool.

00:47I think more pubs as well now, like, we don't go off and do, but we've met the dog owners,

00:53more pubs now are allowing dogs in, which makes it a lot better for the likes of us.

01:05during the first half of 2024, we wanted to know when you last went to the pub

01:11and was it a chain or an independent?

01:14It was last night and it was a quite a large pub and I'm not

01:19gonna say any more about that one because I think you know what I'm talking about.

01:22It was Wetherspoon, which I think's a chain, isn't it?

01:26I don't know.

01:27No, we only go there, we're from the Wirral and when we come over, which is about once a month,

01:34we just, we know where it is, we like St John's Market, we like going round, it's handy for us.

01:41Literally every single day I'm nearly in, like, Wetherspoon, so every single time,

01:45like Queen Square one, one by Liverpool, one Mackey's, literally every single day nearly.

01:52And because it's just easy to have like a quick cup of tea because it's so cheap,

01:56the cup of tea, refillable.
