No phones for Immigration officers on duty at KLIA to curb graft, MACC proposes

Immigration officers, including supervisors, at the counters of KL International Airport Terminals 1 and 2 should not have access to their mobile phones while on duty, says Tan Sri Azam Baki.

Speaking at a press conference at the MACC headquarters on Wednesday (Sept 18), the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner revealed that the commission has recommended this to the Immigration Department following a crackdown on "counter setting" activities, which led to the arrest of 49 Immigration officers.

Azam added that the commission had identified 11 key issues and weaknesses within the Immigration Department that allowed syndicates to exploit the counter setting method to smuggle people into the country.
