Wolves fail to hold onto lead as Newcastle clinch 2-1 win

00:00Wolverhampton Wanderers will have to wait for their first win of the new Premier League season

00:05after throwing away a lead yet again here at Molineux.

00:08Another second half capitulation, Newcastle United winning 2-1

00:12to claim their third win of the new Premier League season.

00:15It's just so poor in the final 20 minutes or so here.

00:19Before it was a 6-2 defeat to Chelsea, that was from the very first minute really of the second half,

00:24the Wolves fell apart. This time it was in the final 20 minutes of the match

00:28and Gary O'Neill will be so disappointed because his team was so impressive up until that point.

00:33So it was a little while to get going, 25 maybe 30 minutes before they started having any real chances

00:39but there was a marked improvement defensively. Newcastle only had one chance in that first 30 minutes.

00:45Anthony Gordon hit the outside of the right post after a really good solo run.

00:49He beat Nelson Samedo and Jose Mosquera before curling one towards that far corner

00:53but was denied by the post. But other than that, Wolves as I say were a lot more solid defensively.

00:58And they took their lead in the 36th minute. Mario Lamina, the captain, so popular here at Molineux,

01:03roaring the stadium into life. Been quite a subdued atmosphere up until that point

01:08but from that very moment when Lamina struck, the atmosphere was really lifted.

01:12It was a great counter-attacking goal. Wolves didn't have much possession

01:15but they made it count when they did have it. Jürgen Strand-Larsen on the right-hand side

01:20shrugged off Dan Byrne before drilling across through the defender's legs.

01:25And a really clever dummy actually from João Gomes who made a good run.

01:28And Lamina, late into the box arriving, thrashed it home at the far post giving Nick Pope no chance.

01:34Going into the break 1-0. Newcastle made three changes at the break.

01:39Alexander Isak was taken off, as was Joel Linton and Longstaff.

01:43And then Sandro Tonali came on, Harvey Barnes, I can't even remember the third change

01:49but another attacking one. Newcastle, they looked like they had a lot more energy

01:53from that point on. Eddie Howe's team must have been a good team talk at half-time

01:59because they came out of the blocks a lot quicker and were pressing on to try and get an equaliser.

02:04There were chances though for Wolves. Strand-Larsen hit the outside of the post

02:08after being played in by Lamina and then forced a good save from Pope with a header

02:12after a Lamina cross. But it was Newcastle who pressed on and looked the more dangerous

02:16of the two teams. And in the end, Wolves' legs just seemed to go, their concentration

02:20seemed to go and Fabian Scheer struck from range to score an equaliser.

02:24Lamina, who played so, so well and for me was the Wolves' man of the match,

02:28he didn't run out quickly enough to Scheer and he struck. It hit Dawson on the head,

02:33flicked off his head and into the top corner, giving Johnston no chance.

02:37Molyneux seemed stunned after that point. Wolves looked stunned as well and it only

02:41took a few minutes for substitutes Harvey Barnes to score an absolute wonder goal

02:46to make it 2-1 to Newcastle and earning all three points.

02:50Not good enough from Matt Doherty, a Wolves substitute came on, didn't really track

02:54Harvey Barnes' run inside, didn't show any real desire to get the ball off of him.

02:58He had space to shoot, had a lot to do to be fair from about 25 yards,

03:02but he curled one right into that top corner. So much power.

03:06Johnston had no chance of saving it. There was a late acrobatic effort from

03:10Mateus Cunha, very nearly getting Wolves an equaliser to make it 2-2.

03:14It didn't go in, Pope made a good save and once again here,

03:18maybe a little bit lapsed in concentration, showing the quality of the Premier League.

03:22It's really cutthroat when these opportunities happen.

03:25And two goals from outside the box, they don't happen very often,

03:28but Wolves need to defend better in these crucial moments.
