Kenyon Green Was Texans' Best Offensive Lineman Against Colts: Stoerner

As good as the Texans offensive line was against the Colts, Clint Stoerner says left guard was the best among them.

00:06The best offensive lineman on that football field Sunday for the Houston Texans, Ron?

00:11Kenyon Green.

00:13You said, you said you was impressed now.

00:17It was better than what you thought.

00:20Hell, it was, it was significantly better than what I thought.

00:25And I'll be honest with you.

00:26Hell, I thought highly of it.

00:27I mean, hell, I've been drawn to tears about the path the man's taking about

00:31rebuilding his body and trying to relay how difficult it is for a big guy to do that.

00:36So I expected him to play well.

00:38And this isn't on a curve, you're saying, right?

00:40This isn't on the, hey, Kenyon just coming back, his first game.

00:44No.

00:45If you take the name off the back, Ron.

00:47Like he was better than Shaq Mason.

00:48Yes, without a doubt.

00:50He was better than Titus Howard.

00:52Yes, without a doubt.

00:53Now, that's tackles versus guards is a hard comp, right?

00:58When you talk about what he at guard is asked to do there, I think there were,

01:04there were weak moments and mistakes made by both tackles.

01:08And I'm not even talking about the penalties, but you can throw that in there as well.

01:13There were situations where, you know, leaving double teams too early by the tackles or

01:20not handling a twist up front by the tackles.

01:24There were just some moments in there.

01:26Shaq Mason as an interior guard, there was, there was, I believe it ended up being a sack.

01:31Shaq Mason didn't pass off a, I think it was a tackle, tackle stunt and gave up a sack.

01:39And I'm not being critical of those guys.

01:40I'm just telling you that everybody across the board, other than Kenyon Green,

01:45unless in the fourth quarter he blows up, then, you know,

01:51he's the best offensive lineman in that game.

01:54With Juice Scruggs left him, he hung him out to dry one time and left him.

01:57And I think it gave away an immediate pressure because they brought three week

02:01and Juice Scruggs went strong for some reason.

02:03So Laramie got a guy and Kenyon got a guy and the third guy came free.

02:08So that's something that appeared to be on Juice, not Kenyon.

02:12Yeah, Ron, I mean, I mean, if you take the name and you take the number off the jersey

02:18and you just watch this film, the first guy that you say,

02:23and you do it multiple times, by the way,

02:25the first guy that you look at the guy next to you and say,

02:27hey man, who is that?

02:28Who is that playing guard?

02:29Who is that?

02:30You're not asking about the tackles.

02:32You're not asking about the right guy.

02:34Hey, who is playing left guard right now?

02:37Damn, that was good.

02:38And then you get to watching him and it's like, damn, he's got good feet.

02:42And then you watch him.

02:43It's like, he's not just blocking well in the run game, Ron.

02:47He's road grading.

02:48Yeah, he's demolishing people.

02:49What people thought he would be coming out of A&M.

02:51You know, you know, I think it's the first run of the game.

02:56Ended up being like a four, maybe a three or four yard gain.

02:59And it's the one where Big Boy, what was Big Boy's name in the middle?

03:04Buckner.

03:04Buckner made the tackle like it was.

03:06And I remember when it happened, it was weird.

03:07He's like, why was Buckner that far in the backfield?

03:09Did he stunt?

03:11Was he playing linebacker?

03:12What the hell?

03:12What the hell was that?

03:14He, him and Laramie, Kenyon and Laramie doubled him and then both let him go.

03:20And I don't, I think it was Laramie, Laramie let him go.

03:22That's why he was going to go to the second level.

03:24But when I say, but it was one where Kenyon had him initially.

03:27And it was, it was the guards guiding and the tackles going, supposed to take him over.

03:32And the guard was going to go up to the next level, right?

03:35Well, they both went to the next level.

03:36So they screwed that up.

03:38But the initial push of the three to four yards was Kenyon kicking his ass.

03:43I mean, it was, and it wasn't just that the play that somebody posted on YouTube

03:47the other day where Kenyon got to the second level.

03:48And he passed off on Buckner and then got up to 32.

03:52Yeah.

03:52Guess what?

03:53There's, there's a very similar play where he got up on, on, uh, what's Zaire Franklin,

03:57the linebacker that was talking that trash to, uh, to, to CJ.

04:00He didn't take him to the ground, but he got up and gave him his business.

04:03I mean, it was like, it was, you know, I'll tell you this.

04:07And again, I want to preface it by saying the fourth quarter may blow up on me now,

04:12but you know, the second best lineman was most impressive.

04:20The two guys that were that played the most in the preseason and the question.

04:24I mean, Ron, I'm telling you though, they, they, when you talk about, I don't know about

04:28how you watch film, but when I watch film, it's like, I don't expect, I really don't expect my,

04:31unless I'm watching Trent Williams, I really don't expect my tackles to just be real nasty,

04:36dirty, you know, physical, um, maulers.

04:39Like I just don't, if you find one, I love it.

04:41Now don't get me wrong, but like, I, I just don't, I don't expect that.

04:45I absolutely 100% expected for my interior offensive lineman and all three of our

04:52interior offensive lineman had, had plays where they were just, I mean, absolute dogs in the

04:58middle.

04:58And, um, I mean, I'm just, I never would have thought that I'd be sitting here talking about

05:04Kenyon green being the best.

05:05If I'm telling you not game one, I'm telling you not game one, man.

05:08I I'm anxious to see, I don't know.

05:10I have to ask Bajani or Creighton, one of the advanced stat guys, but there's, I'd be

05:14interested to see if they're post grades anywhere.

05:18I I'd be, I'd be willing to bet you right now.

05:20I'm sure PFF did.

05:22I'd be, I'd be willing to bet you right now that Kenyon's the top graded, graded lineman.

05:28Especially in a day where they were to me, the number one, I think they were the number

05:35one reason the team won.

05:37Absolutely.

05:38And to think that they were the number one reason that a team that their team won.

05:44And putting up 29 points and Kenyon green was the best from your vantage point is a,

05:50is a, is a huge step.

05:53We said he's passed every single step that he's had to pass since, you know, OTAs, mandatory

06:00mini camp, all of that.

06:02And now it has paid off and he's looking good on the field.

06:04Ron, whether you're talking about knowing your assignment and executing it, you're talking

06:09about pass protection, holding your ground.

06:11So the quarterback has somewhere to push up in the pocket, or we're talking about the

06:15run game where your work, not just working a double team, but you are driving a defensive

06:21tackle two, three, four yards deep and allowing the tackle to take over.

06:27And then you're showing athletic ability to get to that next defender, whether it's a

06:30linebacker or safety.

06:32And then on top of that, you're showing the ability to finish violently.

06:37You're showing that level of dog that everybody hoped that you would have been when you got

06:42drafted.

06:43This Kenyon green that we saw Sunday is absolutely worth taking in the first round.

06:49This Kenyon green that we saw Sunday, again, you take the numbers and the names off of

06:53it.

06:54That is the guy that you point to.

06:56And you want to know who the hell that is.

06:58That's the guy you point to.

06:59And you say, that's the tone setter on this offensive line.

07:02That guy, right?

07:03Yeah.

07:03You better run it off the, off the left guard's ass.

07:05Cause that guy right there means business.

07:07That's that's how, that's how violent, how physical and how impressive Kenyon green was

07:14Sunday against the Colts.

07:15Can he do it for 17, 18?

07:17I don't know, but on Sunday versus the Colts, he was the best Texans offensive lineman.

07:21He's got to be gaining confidence off of that performance, especially man at times is you

07:27sit manhandling manhandling Buckner.

07:30Like he did.

07:31He's got to, that's got to give him major, major confidence moving forward.

07:37The other thing real quick.

07:38I mean, I, I, I just stroked the hell out of Kenyon green.

07:40So, um, this is going to be a little bit of a buzz kill, but

07:45Will Anderson, Ron, I'm gonna tell you, maybe it's just that we've, we've had an off season

07:52and I've been watching preseason football and I've been watching training camp.

07:58And this ain't nothing that we don't already know about Will Anderson, but it was on,

08:03it was showcased in a big way.

08:06He is a, he is a MF in problem, bro.

08:09Kid is a freaking baller.

08:11In a good way.

08:12He, he is, I'm going to tell you this, just watching that game.

08:16If I'm an offensive coordinator, if I'm an offensive line coach, if I'm an old lineman

08:20in this league, if I'm a tackle, I'd rather try to block the Neil Hunter.

08:26Like in terms, like, I don't know, I'm not saying I would have more success against,

08:30against the Neil Hunter.

08:32But physically he, like, you know, you putting in, I mean, it worked physically in a game.

08:37You go soak in a tub after, bro.

08:39We've all had this guy.

08:40We've all had this guy, right?

08:41Rick Casey, the guy at practice that just has such a high motor that in latent practice,

08:46you're like, come on, man.

08:47We're just trying to get to the house.

08:48Yeah, man.

08:49You know what I mean?

08:49Like you can't play.

08:51I only play one way.

08:52That's what Will Anderson looks like in a game.

08:54It looks like everybody else is practicing and just trying to hang on.

08:58And he is just, he is just, I mean, killing folks.

09:01And it's like, it's not even, I looked up one time on the film and I just paused the film,

09:05Ron, and it looked like there were three people trying to tackle him.

09:09There was a guard, a tackle, and I don't know if it's a tight end or a running back.

09:12They literally were all, and it's not even, it's not, it's just so violent and so nonstop

09:19that it's just like, if you're a tackle, it's got like, I don't want to block this guy for

09:22four quarters.

09:23If I got to block him once or twice, cool.

09:25I'm fine with that.

09:26But if he's going to be on my side the whole game, give me DeNeal Hunter.

09:29I'll go over here and get my ass beat on a pass rush a couple of times and give up a

09:32couple of sacks before.

09:34I mean, it's just, it's just, I mean, he is, I don't know what the pass rush is ever going

09:39to look like.

09:40Because there was nothing in there that I was like, man, you can see where he's, you

09:43know, and I don't know that we'll ever see that.

09:44But, you know, the thing about him was that the pass rush skill set wasn't necessarily

09:49polished.

09:50I don't know that in this film you can really see anywhere where you're like, boy, yeah,

09:55he's gotten better in that pass rush.

09:57But I'm going to tell you the high motor, the violent high level of physicality, Will

10:05Anderson is real and he's back and that little ankle injury that he was nursing for about

10:11felt like six months in training camp.

10:14It didn't seem to bother him one bit.

10:16It may be sore today.

10:18Hell, he may have been on a snap count because of it.

10:21I don't know.

10:22But man, I'm telling you, he is an absolute monster and it is, it is nonstop.

10:28I don't know.

10:28I don't know where the dude gets the energy.
