00:00New York City is promising to help charge its residents' e-bike batteries.
00:04E-bikes have become popular among many city dwellers, especially delivery workers.
00:08But they can be dangerous, and not just when they're on the move.
00:11Their lithium batteries can explode and start fires.
00:14Such fires have caused 18 deaths in New York City so far this year.
00:18So on Tuesday, Mayor Eric Adams announced a new program to address this crisis.
00:23Launching earlier next year, the pilot will test new technologies like battery swapping networks
00:30and secure bike parking docks that would allow a select group of delivery workers
00:36to charge bikes safely outside of their homes.
00:39The goal is to really move this outdoors.
00:42This pilot is part of a larger plan called Charge Safe, Ride Safe.
00:46And if it's successful, it could prevent hundreds of fires.
