iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max hands-on

We got some hands-on time with the new iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, which feature bigger displays with thinner bezels, revamped cameras, and Apple’s new Camera Control button, which is pretty fascinating.

00:00We're back in Cupertino for iPhones.

00:10It's iPhone season and the 16 is here.

00:13That's the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, the 16 Pro, and the 16 Pro Max.

00:18Should I talk about the button first?

00:21So we're getting a new button this year.

00:23It's called the camera control button.

00:25It's kind of a mashup of a mechanical button and there's some haptic-taptic controls.

00:30Basically, it'll launch the camera app from wherever you are on the lock screen or the

00:33phone and you can control some of the settings and take a picture or start video.

00:39It's pretty cool.

00:40I love a button.

00:41I love taking photos, so it's a win.

00:44Played around with it a little bit and it's kind of funny getting a feel for it.

00:47You kind of have to push pretty hard to take a photo and then you kind of have to do a

00:51light double tap to change the settings and slide your finger across to change the zoom

00:57or whatever.

00:58I don't know.

00:59I think I'll get used to it, but we'll see.

01:01So the camera control is on all four phones.

01:04Pro phones get an A18 Pro chipset this year and they get bigger screens.

01:09Both other phones are a little bit wider and a little bit taller, so there's just a little

01:13more screen real estate.

01:14The Pro is a 6.3-inch screen now and the Pro Max is a 6.9-inch screen, which is huge.

01:20We got a new color this year called Desert Titanium, which is kind of a goldish color.

01:27It looks better than I thought it would in person.

01:30It looked a little bit brown in the rumors, I'm not going to lie, and I like what they

01:34did here.

01:35There's a bunch of new camera features we didn't really get to test in this space.

01:38There's 4K video at 120fps now.

01:41There's a new microphone array, so some video stuff we're going to have to put through the

01:45paces.

01:46So you'll notice right off the bat on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus that the camera bump

01:51went kind of sideways this year.

01:53It looks a little different and it enables spatial video in case you have an Apple Vision

01:57Pro lying around at home.

02:00I don't know.

02:01There are new colors this year and they're definitely a lot more saturated than they

02:05were last year.

02:06So there's a teal, an ultramarine, and a pink and they look great.

02:11So the regular iPhones come with an A18 chip this year.

02:15It's not a Pro chip, but it's in the same family.

02:18And what ties them all together is this Apple Intelligence, the set of AI features we heard

02:24about it at WWDC.

02:26We heard a lot about it today.

02:28And the demo units we tested had some of those features live.

02:32We got the little glowing Siri and some of the AI writing features, but the catch is

02:39they're not going to be shipping on these phones.

02:41They're coming later this year and they'll be available first in beta.

02:45The 16 and the 16 Plus also get the action button that came on the Pro models last year.

02:50So that's a feature for everybody now.

02:53And you know, if you're feeling spicy, you can program your coffee order in there.

02:58I don't know.

02:59It's a free idea.

03:00All the new iPhone 16 models are available to pre-order this Friday, September 13th.

03:07Spooky day.

03:08They're all going to ship the following Friday, the 20th.
