00:00A surgeon at London's most famous children's hospital is now the focus of an urgent review
00:08after his patients, some of them just four months old, were left with avoidable amputations,
00:16permanent deformities and chronic pain.
00:20Former consultant surgeon Yasser Jaber, who worked in the orthopaedic department of Great
00:26Ormond Street, treated 721 children.
00:31We now know at least 22 of those underwent limb reconstruction surgery are now known
00:38to have been harmed.
00:39Some of them were left with legs of different lengths, in some cases by as much as eight
00:45inches, while other injuries include muscle damage and nerve injuries.
00:52The Sunday Times first broke this story after it was given a leaked confidential report
00:56from the Royal College of Surgeons, who were asked by the hospital to carry out a review.
01:02It found that Mr Jaber's conduct and his department was, quote, dysfunctional, saying that the
01:08NHS Trust was run more like a political organisation, with consultants behaving in an outdated and
01:15unacceptable way.
01:18The Standard has spoken to a lawyer who represents the families, who have had their greatest
01:23fears confirmed.
01:25They say one child may have undergone an avoidable amputation, while others had inappropriate
01:32and unnecessary surgeries.
01:35Great Ormond Street say that they are incredibly sorry and that they are taking the findings
01:39of the report very seriously.
01:42They say all parents have been contacted and that they will address the findings at pace.
01:48The surgeon, Mr Jaber, has not had a licence to practice medicine in the UK since January,
01:53the medical register shows.
01:55He is now thought to be working in Dubai.
