Damaging winds continues across south-east

Damaging wind warnings are in place across the south-east with up to 110 kilometres an hour on Wednesday, August 28.  Video via Bureau of Meteorology.

00:00Damaging wind will continue across southeastern Australia throughout the day on Wednesday,

00:04before yet another bout of strong wind builds in the west tomorrow.

00:08Let's start by looking at the southeast of the country, here's the pressure pattern

00:11for today.

00:12Take a note of the isobars, these white lines, and how pitched they are together across the

00:17southeast, showing us it's a very windy day.

00:20That is reflected with the red wind arrows whistling across from the west as well.

00:24Very windy for Tasmania and Victoria, as well as southern parts of South Australia and New

00:29South Wales.

00:31Unsurprisingly there are broad damaging wind warnings in place across the southeast, including

00:36the Mount Lofty Ranges near Adelaide and far southern parts of South Australia, with wind

00:41here expected to ease late this afternoon.

00:43Much of central and southern Victoria will continue to see damaging wind gusts through

00:47the day on Wednesday, easing off this evening.

00:50Southern New South Wales, including the Illawarra and parts of the Sydney area will also see

00:55wind gusts through this afternoon and this evening, and Tasmania will see very strong

00:59winds for the north and west coast.

01:02Broadly speaking, around these yellow areas we could expect to see wind gusts around 90

01:06or 100 kmh through the course of the day today, but some places that could be even stronger.

01:12Northern and western parts of Tasmania, including the islands, could see their winds blowing

01:16up to 110 kmh, as could the Illawarra district in southern New South Wales, and potentially

01:22some of the mountaintops throughout Victoria.

01:25With winds of that speed, significant impacts are expected and we've already been seeing

01:29all of these occur last night, overnight, and this morning.

01:33Trees and branches down, potentially across roads and onto property.

01:37Power outages remain possible today across the southeastern states, and damage to loose

01:42structures like outdoor furniture, rubbish bins, fences and trampolines, all a possibility

01:47with the winds blowing through this strongly.

01:50A focus on the warnings for Victoria now, because it's not all to do with wind.

01:54If you look really closely you can see this little black line hugging the coast, and

01:57that's showing us a couple of extra warnings on top of the damaging wind warnings.

02:02These are coastal hazards warnings.

02:04Out here along the western coast from Cape Otway out to the South Australia border, that's

02:08a damaging surf warning.

02:10Significant large waves expected to impact that coastline here.

02:14Around Port Phillip, the Mornington Peninsula and the Gippsland coast, we have a warning

02:18for abnormally high tides, as the tidal levels today will be significantly above what they

02:23normally are, and that could result in some local coastal inundation for low lying areas

02:28near the water.

02:30We'll now jump across to the western side of the country, which is having a more benign

02:34day on Wednesday, but that's short lived.

02:36On Thursday, another cold front approaches, that means another spell of rain, another

02:41spell of wintry weather, and perhaps most significantly, another bout of strong winds

02:46for the southwest of the state.

02:48In anticipation of this windy day on Thursday, we have issued another damaging wind warning

02:54from southern parts of Perth, around the southwest corner of the country, through to the Esperance

02:58coastline.

02:59It will be very windy here starting on Thursday morning, continuing towards the end of the

03:04day.

03:05Many Australians to be impacted by the strong wind over the next few days so do stay up
